I always buy my electronics with American Express because you get a 90-day unlimited theft/damage policy for free. Break it or lose it (up to a thousand dollars) within 90 days and they cut you a check, just like that. I had to use it on a Palm Pilot a few years ago.

I heard (but don't know if it's true) that some credit cards double the warranty. Can anybody verify this?

I ask all this because I'm going to get a DSLR tomorrow (my first). Sure, it will be a cheapy (Rebel XS), but it's a new step for me out of the frustrating point and shoot world of indoor photography and low light photography.

What's your opinion?

Thank you. bw!

That would be insurance fraud. It's illegal and wrong.

I had a friend once with a really expensive car stereo system. It kept getting stolen and he would be out in the apartment complex parking lot yelling and screaming.

But he was scamming the insurance company.

Thank you. bw!

LOL! Mike, I think Patrick was poking at fun at your writing style because you switched point of view from "I" to "you".

He was merely pointing out that you were saying your protection benefits him. :)

Just to clarify, does that mean that a one year warranty would be doubled to a two year warranty, or does that mean that they cover for up to a year total warranty including the manufactureres warranty?

Yes. All of my platinum cards double the warranty.

In all my years, I have used the doubled warranty once on an appliance. So if you're one that isn't going to pay it off right away, there is little benefit, IMO, to pay more (interest) for the longer warranty.

just to clarify "double warranty" is up to one year past the original manufacturers warranty. So 90 days, becomes 180 days. 6 months becomes a 1 year. 1 year becomes 2 years. But 2 years only becomes 3 years.

I think the difference between Visa Signature and AmEx is that Visa is only good up to 3 years (2 yrs + 1 yr extension), where as AmEx is good up to 5 years (4 yrs + 1 yr extension).
