This is a portrait of me. I didn't really intend for the fan and hair blown effect, but it was rather hot and I was too lazy to go turn on the AC.

I've been told by a couple professional photographers that investing in photoshop would be a good idea. I'm not really one for editing photos except for contrast and saturation, but does photoshop really make that much of a difference? And which one would be a good choice for beginners?

Elements at least, Photoshop if you can swing it. I started my photo career in film and had a very purist attitude when I came to digital photography. It wasnt until I got photoshop that I found a whole new set of tools to enhance, not alter, my photos. If either of those is out of your price range look for a free distribution-open source program called GIMP. It has a lot of the functionality of photoshop although a bit quirky.

Lightroom? It's like photoshop for photographers. If you can find a student or teacher to buy it from you you can get it for cheap (ish).

BTW - your pic looks very retro - maybe 1950s. Like a candid flashed at a party Sophia Loren was attending.

lightroom is cool but its really best used i feel in conjunction with photoshop cs3 or 4 ect
like gonzo said there is a world of tools to "utilize" not modify the picture with a program like photoshop. shoot ive been using photoshop for over 2 years and i still learn new tricks n tools to enhance my work during digital development every time i shoot, or even just play wit hthe program.

btwi like the shot i agree gotta retro feel to it. something like photoshop u can add texture to something like this plus shooting in raw just has its benefits.

The current version of Elements (not sure what it is). Also, get the "Photoshop Elements (your version) book for digital photographers" by Scott Kelby, you will use it!
