Hey guys,

I've been looking casually for some studio strobes but a local studio is going out of business and selling this Broncolor kit that comes with 3 Impact 41 heads, grid spots, soft box, 3 (crappy) light stands.

Here are a few pics:

I guess what I'm wondering is this worth the $500CDN he's asking? I could probably bring him down a bit without a lot of problems. Is this stuff going to be impossible to get replacement flash bulbs for?

I'm having trouble finding information on what is suppose to be all included in the kit but it seems like it's complete.

I was hoping to get into Alienbees to be honest, since these seem to have only three power settings, maybe I could sell these off and trade up? I'm not sure what the going price for them would be.

A photographer I work for has the exact same case, with two 41s and a 21.
Works okay & gets the job done.

Different bajonet from other Broncolor stuff. (smaller and no "lock")
You need a different modifier to use an umbrella (with a hole for the shaft. Same as the standard reflector, but round front instead of square. (It's probably the bottom one of the three reflectors)

One thing I don't like much about them is that they are only settable in full stops. (41 has full, half and quarter, 21 has one stop less power: And only full and half setting)

The thing I hate about them is how they couple to a stand: You screw them on. Very slow and not too stable. Won't fit a "regular" Manfrotto stand.

On the value: No idea really what they are worth, and not sure how they compare to more modern setup. Also, no idea on the availability of the flash tubes. I'd check that out, and compare them to something more recent before buying. Although it doesn't seem like a very bad deal. (Depending on useage and age)

Hope this helps!

Well, Kurt, I don't know a thing about these lights but a little googling seems to indicate that $500 isn't a half bad price for the set. Here's a listing from Toronto asking $1499 for essentially the same set:

People who have them (or had them) are certainly enthusiastic. However, if it were me, I'd be inclined to give them a pass and look for something more current and mainstream. 300WS, 50W modeling light, only full/half/quarter power settings, non-standard lightstand mount, uh uh.

Hey guys thanks for the comments. $500 seems like an alright price but I think I'll pass and maybe just grab some AB's in the near future. Something with a greater range of power adjustments.

I'll talk to the guy selling though and tell him to call me if he decides to go lower on the price.
