My fiance and I had our engagement photos taken 2 weeks ago. I noticed our photographer aiming the camera somewhere above or around us before he aimed at us and took the shot. I think he was using a 50D.

I'm still a bit new to photography but was he metering and then focusing? I didn't get to ask him at the time because it slipped my mind.

I take it he was using a flash.

If he was, then you are correct.

Nope, no flash.

Even without a flash, he could have been metering. If you were both wearing very dark or very light clothing, he could have been metering on an mid-tone so as not to throw the exposure off.

How far above you? Could have been focus/recompose if he was using the center AF-point. Aims at your head, focuses, then recomposes to get the frame he wants, then takes the shot. Looks funky from the lens-side if you don't know what's going on. :)

Exactly. All I saw was him tilting the lens up and down and you can clearly hear the beeping of the AF locking on.

It was quite gloomy/cloudy that day so it could've been he was metering off our faces/heads as to expose it properly.

I should email him and ask...lol

He might have been metering the sky to put it at about +2 and keep it from blowing out.

But wouldn't that make us too dark?

But wouldn't that make us too dark?

Yes, it would if the contrast range was too great. But the alternative, giving adequate exposure to the foreground, would blow out the sky. The best compromise is to expose so the sky is overly bright, just short of clipping. This also gives the foreground the most exposure that is possible without losing the sky. As shot, neither will be satisfactory but both areas will have the best possible data for post-processing. In situations that are beyond the abilities of the camera you have to expose in a way that will give you the best starting point for PP. Of course, this is best done in RAW.
