I have only been using 16-35II for 2 days, and I realize how troublesome the hood it. It is soooooo wide. It is more like a salad plate than a hood. I really wonder if it does anything at all. Is there any other option here? Is there any aftermartket/rubber hood I can use instead of the OEM one? I am using it on 5D.

It has saved my front element many times. While it is wide and shallow, it needs to be in order to avoid vignetting.

If Canon made it that wide, it's most likely because it needs to be...

I don't think there really is an option that doesn't vignette.

I feel for ya, I do.. it IS like a salad plate (LOL, great analogy).

I've found it's not too bad and can leave it on the lens if I put it with the hood pointing up, in my Domke f2.

You can see what I mean, here:

I am not so sure if it is really necessary.

Why I think this? It is because I used to have Canon EF-s 10-22 and Sigma 10-20. They both have wide end of 10mm, 77mm front thread. The Sigma hood is so low profile it is just barely wider than the lens itself. The Canon one, as you know, same hood as 17-40L, which is just as much of a salad plate. this make me think that Canon could have done much better job for the hoods design

Actually, Canon hood are sometime (or often time) under design even it is so big. I have been using 17-55IS hood, which is designed to have FOV of 27mm, on 24-105L on 5D. No additional vignetting introduced.

Add five or six 1-cm pieces of duct tape or electrical tape all around your lens hood, perpendicular to the front element plane. See if you see them when you shoot.

I keep my 17-40L hood (which is also a salad plate (and might be the same hood)) in the outer pocket of my Domke f-2, and I just pull it out when I use the lens.

You can use alternative hoods on 1.6 crop bodies, but, for FF and even 1.3 (at some focal lengths) you need the original hood if you don't want LOTS of vignetting. Unfortunately, it needs to be that hood for your 5D.
