So I was looking at C Stands for no particular reason other than avoiding work.... and I was wondering, how do you attach a light to something like this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …T_Century_Stand_Grip.html (external link)

It has a grip head on the end of the boom, do you have to buy a seperate part like this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …_E200_Stand_Adapter_.html (external link)
In order to make it work?

If so what's the advantage of having a second grip head vs a boom that just has the adapter built into the end like this: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …0_D600_Mini_Boom_3_8.html (external link)

Just looks like more parts to adjust, tighten, and hope that it's not so loose that things fall off.

That first thing isn't used to attach a light to (at least, I wouldn't). The "grip head" mounts to the stand.
You use it to hold paper, tracing, cloth, a reflector, whatever. Something lightweight.

A proper boom can use a counterweight.

I understand the grip head that attaches the boom to the stand. But all the C- Stand booms have a second grip head at the end of the boom

The way I've always done it is to clamp the light directly onto the shaft of the grip arm, and have the grip head on the other end, acting as a counterweight (I also hang a sandbag off the grip head to balance it if there's something heavy on the end). Be careful when doing this, since the shaft doesn't "bite" quite as easily as a standard spigot, so things tend to rotate unless they are done up very tight (especially given the funny angles they'll probably be at).

I'm guessing what I do probably classifies as a misuse of a grip arm or something :) That said I've not had any trouble even with my heaviest modifier (beauty dish) provided the extension is kept modest and the bottom of the stand is heavily sand bagged.

No, as René has said, this is not a boom. This grip head is not used for attaching a boom. This grip head is used to attach an arm for lightweight device like a gel or gobo.

This is what you want to attach a boom: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …_Pivoting_Boom_Clamp.html (external link)

The boom arm itself will be a telescoping shaft with a proper light attachment stud on one end and some way to attach a counterweight on the other.

I think we're (or I am) getting confused over terminology here - a grip arm is not the same thing as a boom. I was assuming you wanted to attach a light head to a grip arm, so apologies for any confusion.

ok, got it, the one I showed in the beginning is not for lights, but for other types of attachments.
