I just bought the PowerShot SX1 IS for $499
incl shipping, with no sales tax (out of state) :D

I had an old 2.0-megapixel Kodak I bought back in 2000
and I was getting tired of the image quality I was getting

I'm primarily using my new camera to take pictures of
products we sell in our business for websites and for print.

But, I've always been facinated with photography and
with young grandchillins running around, there's plenty
of opportunity to do alot with this new equipment.

I do have one question...I understand that there is
some lenses available that slide onto the lense of
my camera that enable me to take close up pics.

Anybody have any idea where I can find the exact
lense that would enable me to take good close ups?

Try Lensmate for a filter adapter that will also accept the Raynox DCR-250 macro lens.

Sometimes it is better to back up and use the zoom to get close. You have to experiment to see.

I have the raynox 250 and it gets very close, but only very close. You can't zoom out because you will get a tunnel pic from all the stuff on the lens. I love it though for bug pics and stuff.

I have the raynox 250, but because of it's super shallow depth of field, I have not the patience to use it. ;)

Sounds like that's what I need for close ups...do I order the
"Raynox DCR-250 Super Macro fits 52 - 67mm", or would I order the
"Hoya Close-Up Macro Set (double coated) 58mm"

Both are shown on the order page at http://www.lensmateonline.com/store/sx10sx1.html (external link) ?

Not sure why you need a macro lens for a cmaera which has a dedicated Macro and Super Macro function plus a 28-560 optical lens? Have you even experimented with the cameras Macro or Super Macro modes?

you only need to buy the raynox if you are shooting tiny objects such as rings, small trinkets, bugs etc. if you go the hoya route, you will find yourself not impressed with the image quality as raynox is THE BEST for macro adapters. look up raynox and canon on flickr.

your first investment should be a canon 430ex or 580ex flash.

Point taken. I just purchased the camera and I'm still waiting for it to be
shipped to me, so no I have not had opportunity to experiment with it yet.

But, thanks for letting me know that it has Macro and Super Macro function
plus a 28-560 optical lens...I'm not sure what that means but I will as time
goes by and I learn more about how to use the camera.

Thanks for the advice about using Raynox versus Hoya.

I did purchase a "318AF Digital Slave Flash for Canon Powershot SX1"
for only $29.99. Is this as good as the Canon 430ex or 580ex flash?

Also, the guy at the camer place was telling me that standard AA batteries
will only provide about 30 minutes of use, and he was suggesting that I
buy some kind of "super rechargable" batteries.

Is this something I should get, or will Energizer Bunny Rabbit batteries
keep me hopping?

Rockrz - I haven't done the Raynox Macro thing yet, but can comment on batteries. (SX10 IS has same needs as your SX1 IS).

If available where you are, I can recommend Sanyo's Eneloop rechargeable AAs. You'll need sets of 4 for the SX1.

They're modestly priced and I've used them in an earlier 4-AAs camera since last year. They seem to be very reliable, and don't "lose their charge" in a few days.

The maker claims they will hold 80% charge for 12-months, though I can't verify that.

PS:- Do put your Canon Manual on your PC and study it. (I have both SX10 and SX1 Manuals, from when I was deciding which to buy.) They're very comprehensive and have a lot of explanations and How-Tos, that are certainly helping a Newy like me!

Regards, Dave.

OK, thanks for the tip on the Sanyo's Eneloop rechargeable AAs

Just curious...how do regular AA batteries do, OK?

The guy from the camera store made it sound like they'll
crap out in about 30 minutes, and he said regular batteries
won't allow you to have full use of the lense capability.

Is he just blowin hot air trying to make a sale?

Alkalines won't stand up to the type of load a digital camera puts on them like NiMH do. However the type of battery won't have any effect on "lens capability".

When I bought my A630 I went to Target to buy an SD card and batteries. The guy in the camera dept. told me I did not need rechargable if I buy these...he was right. I only replace my batteries twice a year. They are 10 bucks for a 4 pack and last for taking tons of pics and my cameras are on and off and used daily most of the time...they are Energizer e Lithium #on the battery is 2021. Never have a need to use rechargables with these. I buy two packs at a time and am set for the year. Hopefully they will last as long with the SX10. Just got my camera this past week and love it! Will keep you posted on it! ;)
