I've had this 40D for about 18 months, use it as a poor mans 1Dmk3 for shooting sports.

I got a persistent ERR 99 today. DId all this as recommended:

To isolate the cause of the issue, we suggest that you do the following:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99″ message appear? If it does, then the camera should be
serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Insert the CF card.
3. Turn on the camera.
4. Format the CF card in the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

Does the “ERR 99″ message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most
likely source of the issue. Try using a different card.

If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:

1. Turn off the camera.
2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser
or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the
camera body.
3. Reattach your lens.
4. Turn on the camera.
5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.

If the “ERR 99″ message only appears when one particular lens is
attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician.

If you see the “ERR 99″ with a different Canon lens attached, then the
camera should be serviced.

Here's an example of an image that came off of this. All prior images were correctly exposed.

looks like I need to send this in but I need the camera in about 3 weeks and if this is not recoverable, then I'll look for a used 1Dmk3 quickly. Anybody have any idea what this problem is?

Camera has about 10K clicks on it. It's been used in all sorts of temp extremes - I shoot alpine skiing with it - but it should not have been subjected to condensation since I'm really careful about that.

Any thoughts?

I'd send it. Call them up first.

I am no pro, but to me if that shot was taken with the camera turned sideways, it looks to me you have a shutter problem... Very slow open/close.

I believe it was in portrait mode.

I had exactly the same issue with my 40D - ERR99s and and an overexposed strip on the images... eventually the camera would only work capture images in Live View mode.

The cause was shutter failure (after 5000 clicks), it needed a new PCB and shutter unit. Good luck

$201.83. Shutter mechanism was repaired - and then they do a bunch of stuff to make you feel better - clean the sensor, test it etc...
