Can I use AF when I shoot video with either 500D or 5DII? My impression is only MF can be used in video mode.

Please clarify and thanks!

It is very slow (takes roughly three seconds to complete), so you will want to avoid it. Also, it's not "always on", and you will have to press a button to initiate it, when needed.

So AF can be used for 500D but it is very slow. Have you tried the MF while shooting video? Is it better than AF? thx

Personally, I always focus manually when shooting video. My Sigmas have normal-sized focusing rings, and the kit lens can be focused by grabbing and turning the lens hood. The focusing ring on the 50mm prime however is a bit small and inconvenient to use, but I don't use that lens that much for video stuff.

Of course, while preparing for the shoot, and if the subject is going to stay at certain distance, you could use the AF once. Or you could also use the live view screen at 10x magnification and manual focus during the preparation as well.
