How about an email, or PM when a thread gets moved or altered?

I've seen threads get moved, but never get a PM or anything from the Mod who moved the thread.

This is usually just a courtesy thing, to let you know that you posted in the wrong section, etc.. it also gives you a possibility to discuss with the Mod, why you think the post belongs where you put it originally.

As I said, this is just common courtesy on most forums and it would be nice to have here. I recently saw someone on DP Review badmouth this forum because they thought their post had been deleted when it had actually just been moved. A new policy for moving threads would have prevented that, I think.

Anyways... not ranting just throwing this out there - I've been on the web a long time and an active participant in many forums, so I thought I'd mention this.

Most often, a thread is moved because it's in the wrong area. In these cases, we leave a "redirect" behind so that people who expect to see it in x section can see that it's been moved.

In those cases, it's pretty obvious why a thread has been moved and no PM is neccessary.

In other cases where a thread has gone bad (troll-infested, or just plain out of control), a thread will be either locked or removed. In these cases, a PM is sent because someone's behaviour resulted in the thread being closed/removed.

In the majority of cases (moving threads to the correct section), it's unrealistic to enter into a PM discussion with the OP to decide where to place the thread. The forum layout here is pretty straight-forward, so there's usually no need for such discussion.

As I said, it's just common courtesy. It also helps to educate a user about "why" their post was moved plus it gives them an option to "dispute" why it was moved.

I've also noticed that sometimes if you use the CP to view your subscribed threads that when a topic is moved, it seems to stop updating your subscription on that thread. Thus why some may feel like their thread was deleted, I think.

Why would you feel the need to dispute it? If the thread was moved to another location it still exists and can still be viewed and replied to.

Hmmm, that shouldn't matter. The thread has a number and should be viewable regardless of the location. Perhaps some of your issues were due to threads be locked or moved to Storage which you do not have access to. I have several threads that were part of the lens archive that were moved from EF lens section to the archive and all my updates work fine.

Just trying to point out that it would be nice to know about it. It would better communication and not feel like there are strong-armed moderators running around moving/deleting/modify​ing posts at will. (not claiming this but it can happen and a little communication can go a long ways to prevent this)

I may want to dispute it because normally, I choose where I posted it carefully with considerations based on topic matter, desired visibility, etc...

It's just nice when you put in effort to post something to the forum, that you get notified if it gets moved or altered. The post is the possession of the poster - it's their material. They should be told if something happens to it, for whatever reason. The same as the poster retaining copyright on their posts, they should at least be kept in the loop about the location/situation of their posts.

This is very common on most other forums either by the forum itself or by the moderator or by both. If a PM is too much, which it sounds like it is for you guys, how about a post in the thread that says something like: "moved to blah blah - because it doesn't belong here - the moderator"

Just moving a post invisibly does nothing to help the poster understand why their post was moved/deleted/altered.

I do not think you realise how many threads are moved for one or another reason.

As for disputing a move. Why should moderators initiate a discussion that most likely will not change anything? Afterall the member that feels the need to dispute a move can ALWAYS contact any moderator. It only takes seconds for that member to send a PM....... Anyway the majority of members here fully accept threads are moved only a few complain.

But in the end it is moderators decision where a thread belongs.

Yeah, I understand... but why not at least a note about why the post was moved and by whom? At least that way, the poster would know, and if they felt it warranted a discussion, then at least they'd know who moved it and could contact them about it?

Whoever moves a thread is a mod or admin, and the team does not do anything "just for fun". And reason for moving is almost always "in wrong section". If you lose your thread, you can track all your latest threads in

Thanks guys... not trying to be a PIA.. just curious. I'd had two of my threads get moved (one legitimately in my mind at least) and I'd seen a few others - just thought I'd mention it.
