I never really understood the need to one-up somebody, if what you currently use works for you and isn't limiting your results who cares. You gotta love the gear heads though, they keep the second hand market full of stuff.

If you have the time the whole thing is pretty good, if not ff to about 5:10 mark for the best one up I've heard of.

I switched from Nikon to Canon, and my dad still shoots Nikon, so it's a different sort of one-upmanship... although now, he really just kind of shakes his head at me....

Oh well. I made the right decision.

Seriously, I couldn't be happier for them. My comment about looking for the MkIII was with tongue firmly planted in cheek. I will no doubt have my own 5DII at some point (hopefully sooner rather than later).

The whole photography in the family sort of flourished within each of us independently. I was the only one shooting when we were all in the same household. The others developed their affinity long after we went our separate ways (anyone guessing about a "photography gene" out there??).

We do compare our work, and each of us has a dramatically different style and type of interest, so it is a bit like apples and oranges. Everyone does well in their own way, though . . . I think because their gear doesn't stand in their way, but helps them get their own vision out more easily . . .

Grab a used 1Ds MKII -- That'll do it.

I'd just be glad that someone in my family had an interest in photography, although I do have a cousin who owns an XSi, but he refuses to take it out of green-box mode.

One thing I have found though: even if they're not interested in photography as a hobby, they're usually interested in the images, which is more important to me anyway.

you know, that whole "can't shoot sports" with a 5D thing... Plus, even when I had a 70-200 it was the f4 with IS and she thought hers was better....

I second the vote for the Hasselblad!

I'd love it if other family members lived close and also had nice Canon gear - there's a huge potential for sharing lenses etc. that might be hard to justify for a single photographer but would make sense for 2 or 3. Would be sure to get insurance...

No one in my family can afford what I have, so I'm not worried. The only thing is that the grandkids, who are pros, all have N*kons. I don't feel bad. My 5DII kicks their gear!
