I'm trying to learn my flash in manual mode - went out to the front yard to shoot some flowers. f/16, small aperture and 1/8th flash power (580exII)

Does it work for you?

Looks great. I would never have guessed how you shot that. Did you do any PP at all?

Thanks :) I shot with my flash on camera, with a Lumiquest Softbox attached.

Cropped in photoshop, contrast/saturation adjusted, and did some sharpening.

There were also some random green leaves around the edges that I burnt to black.

exposure is spot, bang, right on which is very difficult to do. You just need to work on better composition. Still a very nice shot.

Spot on! Go out and shoot some more!! Now that you have learned how to shoot your flash in manual mode, you can challenge yourself with different compositions.

The lighting is exceedingly flat. The perspective and the pose are directly frontal.
Therefore, the lighting and the geometry of the setup have combined to produce the minimum illusion of 3-dimensionality.

You may want to take on the challenge of creating more 3-dimensionality in your images.
