Hello

I'm trying to produce a file for the printer using QuarkXpress 7.0. I'm currently at the stage where I am just about ready to smash my computer to pieces, followed shortly afterwards by the rest of my house, my cars, and then probably the rest of the village.

The problem is that I am getting jagged edges on my images imported into Quark. These images are sized as requested by the printer (300ppi - although he always says dpi) and the dimensions are correct for my document.

If I then zoom in on those images in Quark they are perfectly clear and non-jagged, right up to massive on-screen sizes of 600%. It looks as if the images are too large and have jagged edges due to being sized to fit the box, but this can't be the case because Photoshop shows the image as the correct size (215mm wide in this case) and also a small on-screen image when I got to View Print Size.

Why am I getting images that are jagged when viewed at 100% in Quark, but non-jagged at huge enlargements of many hundreds of percent that isn't required anyway?

What on earth am I doing wrong here? I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Thanks very much,

Mike

I forgot to add that I printed it to a PDF file and it's still jagged.

Quark displays low-resolution on the screen, until printed or converted to PDF. This keeps file sizes small, and easily manageable. The images aren't "embedded" in the .qxd or .qxp files, per say. Are you using the "File-> Export-> Layout as PDF" option, or actually printing to PDF? You may need to double check your PDF compression settings. Shoot me a PM if you need more assistance. I'm happy to help!

Thanks for your reply :-)

I selected Full Resolution under the Preview Resolution option. It made it better, but still clearly jagged. It's clear and non-jagged as soon as I zoom in to 125% and above.

To get my PDF I just did Control + P and printed it. That is all I have been shown. I'll try it again using your suggestion.

Thanks again,

Mike

Just tried it (File > Export > Layout as PDF) and it worked! Non-jagged and looking fine.

Thanks for that! You saved me having to smash something to bits here.

Great! No matter if you choose low or high reolution preview, your images will always 'appear' distorted or low resolution...that's just how Quark is. It sounds like your PDF print driver settings need to be changed to "Press Quality".

Glad I could help!

I'll have a look at those settings. I'm learning as I go along, so there are bound to be loads of things I do wrong!

Thanks again,

Mike
