A word of warning to anyone ordering online and using FedEx for shipping. Apparently, if the item you order doesn't specify "signature required," FedEx will just dump the package on your front porch and take off without notifying you it's there.

We ordered some items from an pet supply company for a total order of about $60.00. When the package didn't show up when we expected it, my wife went back online to check the tracking. It indicated the item had been delivered. Well, I was home all day and at no time was a package delivered that I was aware of. It seems what the driver did was left the box on the front porch and didn't even ring the doorbell. My wife didn't arrive home from work until 2 AM, by which time someone had stolen the package.

It's not a big deal because of the cost of the items, but I suggest anyone ordering online make sure they get a signature required from the vendor.

I wonder how the druggie that took the box likes his new cat litter disposal refills?

This is why I love UPS...they seem to care more, at least in my area.

FedEx delivered 4 speakers (Mirage) valued at $600 and left them on my front steps while I had construction going on. When I tracked it and found out it was delivered I flipped out as they were no where to be found.

Turned out in the end, the contractor picked them up and brought them to me a few days later when he came back as he didn't want to leave them on my front steps.

UPS will always leave packages around my back porch and even once opened my detached garage and left it there with a note on my back door.

UPS always bags boxes for me if it even hints of rain. FedEx never does.

Fed Ex in the Uk seem a little better - I missed a delivery which they took back to the depot as a signature was required. When I rang them to ask them to leave it by my front door the next day they refused to unless they got a signature. Was kinda annoying but at least they make sure it gets into the right hands...although it looked like they had played football with it as the package was in a pretty poor state when I got it.

Depends on which FedEx Service is requested by your shipper. FedEx Home Delivery drops packages and leaves without signature. You CAN request signature delivery, but it's a surcharge.

FedEx Ground (not to be confused with Home Delivery) does require signature confirmation upon delivery. Again, it's a more expensive service

FedEx Express service ALWAYS requires a signature unless the recipient signs a signature waiver agreement.

Like anything else, you get what you pay for ... or what the shipper pays for.

Sorry you lost your goods. As you stated, next time, ask for signature confirmation on delivery and make sure someone is there to receive the package(s).

My experience (regardless of shipper) - Signature required doesn't guarantee the driver will do their job BUT if the item is stolen after being "delivered" and they don't have a valid signature, it's much easier to process a claim with them (than if stolen and no sig was req'd). So always get a signature req'd on items of value.

I've witnessed them walk up to my porch, drop the package, and sprint (no kidding!) back to the van before I can barely get the deadbolt open.

The most consistently responsible? USPS.

UPDATE: The package turned up! Turns out the moron FedEx driver delivered it down the street to 3511 instead of 3411, which is our house...vmad The people that live there are nice enough that they brought it to us.

This has happened before with the Postal Service. Apparently our educational system has failed at teaching these people the difference between the numerals 4 and 5...

The difference logarithmically approaches zero for increasingly large values of 4.

Hurray!
Yeah, don't believe any of them are infallible, just in my small town, the local postman/woman has been the best. ;)

Always good to have expensive toys shipped to your place of employment, if it's the type of employment where someone you know and trust is always "on duty" during delivery hours, like a receptionist, etc.

Lucky you. A friend ordered an entire computer system from Dell back in February.

UPS decided that leaving it on the front step wasn't a good idea, so the driver thoughtfully took it around back.

A week later, and about 20" of snowfall, my friend called Dell to find out when the computer was going to be delivered... You can guess the rest.

Neither is perfect, but in general I've had much better luck with FedEx.

That is NOT FedEx's fault. The place you order should give you an option for signature delivery. UPS does the same thing, they'll leave it on the porch as well or by the door, etc. If you want signature delivery, because it costs more, you usually have to specify to the place you're ordering from. Or you could just not live in the ghetto :)

I wonder how the druggie that took the box likes his new cat litter disposal refills?
