Went to mail some letters today and took my 20D with a 50mm f/1.4 just in case...

Weather was cold and completely overcast, but good for colour saturation. Spotted a couple of items on the stroll home and snapped a frame of each at 200 ISO, RAW, autofocus. Images as shown are cropped to my taste, and colour and saturation were slightly adjusted in PSCS, but they are completely unsharpened.

Comments welcome!

Cheers,
Terry

I like highly cropped pics, Great job. How would it look if it were sharpened?

Thanks a lot BB. I tend to favour emphasis on colour and composition, and usually find that including too much information can be confusing and weakens the impact of an image; so, cropping is my friend, unless I can get it exactly how I want it in-camera. With only the 50mm lens to hand, this wasn't really practical today.

I haven't tried playing with these shots much, but I suppose if I wanted to create a bolder graphic look I could cheat up the saturation and sharpness. I did try adding a little, but in the end I took it all out again because the results just looked a bit faked. All a matter of personal taste, I guess. At 100% the RAW file looks about as sharp as I'd ever need it to be in the portions of the images that I'd intended to be in focus; I'm very pleaded with this little lens so far.

Actually, the images looked a bit brighter and more saturated in Photoshop, working on them in Adobe RGB; would they look better if I converted them to sRGB before posting them, do you know? I'm very new to this business.

Thanks,
Terry

Sorry folks, I'm trying to repost the images as sRGB files to see if they look a little less flat on screen..bear with me for a bit...

Well, some folk here often seem to feel that I "grate" on their nerves, so it's a pleasant relief to get some civil and positive feedback! I thank you, kind sir.

regards
Terry

Terry,
In the first the repititious patches of green showing between the slats in the steps suggest movement to me. I like the irony (you started it!) that you portray, suggesting movement in an object that hasn't moved in a long time. In fact if it is a fire escape, as I suspect, the only movement on it would be hurried. Also, don't laugh at me, but I see an outline of a llama here. I'm sure that wasn't intentional; probably a byproduct of my formative years.
I am sorry, but I'm not getting the same excitement out of the second. I like it initially. I'll have check back and look again.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi JF--

What? You don't see the aardvark in the second one!! I must be slipping. :D

Actually, I do see the origami-inspired creature in the staircase--apparently the fire it was running from when it fell between the treads was a real five-a-llama.

Thanks for the interesting comments, John.

Regards,
Terry
