Odd poll. Only one has the nickname Nifty Fifty. Or were you really asking which one people like the most?

I'll ask too: nifty as in the best/most-liked? Or which is nicknamed the Nifty Fifty?

edited the OP, which has the NICKNAME of nifty fifty.... It's come up waaaaay too many times IMHO, so I'm trying to make something somewhat official in terms of showing what everyone thinks is called nifty or should be...

50mm f1.8

Reason is the cost & appearance vs. performance!

Whatever happened to that unofficial official thread with the nickname of lenses? I remember seeing it a while back.

dust pump, the brick, wigma, bigma, magic drainpipe, etc.. etc...

I always preferred the f/1.8 = thrifty 50 and the f/1.4 the nifty 50. The 1.8 is plainly a cheap-o lens. The 1.4 is pretty decent and still inexpensive.

The confusion comes from the fact that in addition to "Nifty Fifty" it also has the nickname "Thrifty Fifty." Some people see this and assume a lens can't have two nicknames, so insist that "Nifty" applies to the 1.4. They're wrong, of course, but sow confusion wherever they go.

The 1.8 has most excellent glass in a mediocre casing. Having shot with both, I recommend getting a mark I if you have an opportunity. With a decent build, that lens is a joy to shoot with.

I've always considered:

- 50 f/1.8 = Thrifty Fifty
- 50 f/1.4 = Nifty Fifty
- 50 f/1.2 = Shifty Fifty

Every poll has to intentionally leave out one or more lenses so others can chime in and correct.

What about the 50mm f/2.5 Macro?

And to add even more confusion, isn't that actually the 50 f/2.5 Compact Macro? ;)

The way I've always heard it told is:

50/1.8II = Nifty Fifty -or- Thrifty Fifty -or- Plastic Fantastic

50/1.4 has no nickname that I'm aware of.

50/1.2L = Shifty Fifty, for obvious reasons.
