I did it by choice and the sigma is well, a sigma (nothing wrong with it at all, just that it's newer and has no nicknames as far as I know).

The Sigma 50 f/1.4 is pretty much universally called the Sigmalux. Mainly because the image quality is such that it is being compared to Leica (summilux). Not that the Sigmalux renders similarly to the summilux, just that, especially for the price, it's a top class optic.

The confusion comes from the fact that in addition to "Nifty Fifty" it also has the nickname "Thrifty Fifty." Some people see this and assume a lens can't have two nicknames, so insist that "Nifty" applies to the 1.4. They're wrong, of course, but sow confusion wherever they go.

The 1.8 has most excellent glass in a mediocre casing. Having shot with both, I recommend getting a mark I if you have an opportunity. With a decent build, that lens is a joy to shoot with.

QFT.

it's the 50mm f/1.8 II.

there's nothing nifty about the f/1.4, as there's nothing truly odd about it at all. the f/1.8 offers high-grade optics in a plastic shell for under $100. that's nifty.

Can't be 50/1.0. That's the 50-50... or was that the price tag?

The 1.0 folks...
assafphotography, clint0914, iShoot, MinhThien, Rio_mang, That_Fox
The 1.2 folks...
axcel23, bigcountry, Chris28, datadump, ed from pa, LamontSanders, lddw, mrmarklin, plusnq, qckk, sadowsk2, THE TROOPER, yugenm

Most are probably just joking around.

I always preferred the f/1.8 = thrifty 50 and the f/1.4 the nifty 50. The 1.8 is plainly a cheap-o lens. The 1.4 is pretty decent and still inexpensive.

I will add to the sowing of confusion and say I would LIKE the 1.8 to be the Thrifty Fifty and the 1.4 the Nifty Fifty.

Now, if I could only make it so.

When it gets to my turn to be in charge there will be changes.

the fiddy one-faw.

I like it! Although I wonder how many "old folks" like me like the inspiration for that name? :D

I would suspect that the results are based on which version people own - more copies of the 1.8 out there than the 1.0L
