There is a group of photographers that volunteer in my church to shoot various events that go on in and around the church. I would like to set up a way for all of us to submit our images, be able to look at each others images, and then allow the web guy and the graphics guy to be able to snag these images whenever they need them.
I have used ftp in the past to send off some images and thought this might be the way to go. Right now we each edit our own images and then burn a CD and turn it in. But this is really a hassle if they want to get some quick images and I don't feel like making a special trip to the church just to drop them off.
I also use smugmug for my own personal stuff, but don't know if there is a way to make smugmug work like an ftp site.Any ideas?

Not really familiar with SmugMug, even though I have an account (I don't use it at the moment) If you have your own domain, either yours or your church's, then you can ftp your photos to your/church's site. All you need is the password/username.

If this isn't what your talking about, then disregard this!

Smugmug is more user friendly than FTP. You can setup an account, share the login/password with all participants, and use it to upload, store, and download images by all. You could setup individual albums by photographer, or by event for shared use. Additionally, SM can be used for image distribution and print fullfilment to church members.

flickr might be your best bet - very easy to use, allows commenting etc, can allow full res. downloads and it'll even do slideshows based on tags or groups, which would be very easy for the web guys to integrate into the site and the slideshows would show the latest images without any intervention from them.

Another option is Photoshelter. I use that for distribution to clients. I just upload private galleries, give them their passwords and they have access to all their photos anywhere they have an internet connection to view or download. I havent burned a CD since I started using it.

I use a yahoo account for this. I can create IDs for FTP access of others to drop files into a specific directory at the web site. Eventually I'll put together a way for a java or other tool to create a gallery automatically based on content, but if you want a way for photogs to use FTP to share photos, this would work.

Smugmug also donates accounts to non profit organizations.

If you have a static ip address you can host your own ftp site. I use SERV-U. You can allow access to certain folders on your cpu. My husband set it up for me. I'm a graphic designer who works for a photographer - mostly from home. This is how we transfer back and forth our files. Works like a charm. Then for the actual file transfer we use FireFTP through Firefox. There is also a way to use it for a dynamic address, but our old isp wasn't real helpful in getting that set up.

If you use your own domain, you need to be careful not to leave your photos on there otherwise your disk space usage will fill up REAL quick.

You don't even need a static IP address! I use this to run my development/testing server (pretty much only used by me :) )

I ran SERV-U back in college ~10 years ago, glad to see it's still chugging away.

For online sharing of photos, also look into Gallery2. I use a Registry "patch" (hack?) that allows me to publish right to my gallery from Windows Explorer.
