For this week's Macro DSLR Speed Challenge the topic is:
"Red, White, and Blue"

In honor of the upcoming holiday, use your macro skills this week to shoot something that's red, white, and blue. Even if you're not American and don't celebrate July 4th, you can still shoot something red, white and blue. Just make sure all 3 colors are in the shot. Other colors can be in there as well, but those 3 must be included as part of the subject, supporting elements or background.

Get creative, get colorful, and get shooting!

Standard Rules apply:
Photo Submissions:

1. Camera - Any Canon DSLR camera
2. Lens - Any lens, or attachment that can give Macro photos (ex. extension tubes, bellows, macro filters, reverse mounted lens and of course a true macro lens.).
3. Time - any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
4. Size - Please see the Image posting rules.
5. Post-Processing - do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
6. Posting -
* ONE MACRO PHOTO per photographer in each challenge.
* Photo Name/Title in the message.
* Camera model & lens used in the message.
* Post brief Exif data including ISO, shutter speed and aperture used in the message.
* Notes - anything you feel you need to explain.
7. Commenting - No commenting during challenge. When the posting is closed and a winner has been declared, comments can be made in this thread.
8. Questions - Use PM
9. Have FUN! :)

One challenge every week, on the following schedule:

* New Topic - After winner is declared.
* Posting Starts - Right after topic is announced.
* Posting Ends - 10:00 PM Eastern Thursday, July 2nd, 2009. Winner will be announced shortly thereafter.
* Winner from this competition decides the theme of the next one (and judges it for a winner) after this competition is closed.

Not my best composition but the only macro I have with red white and blue in the frame.

A pair of lady bugs I shot while camping. The blue white background was my tent.

Not as many entries as I thought there might be this week, but I guess this wasn't as easy a theme as I hoped. Many thanks for those who participated!

Mike53545 and your "Steering Wheel Mustang" - A nice way to start the entries this week! Very colorful and it fit right in with the theme. Nicely done!

Unnerv and "Fireworks" - Another nice shot, and I bet that ladybug was happy. I never would have guessed the blue was a tent. You had me fooled; I thought it was the sky! The bugs look more orange than red though (unless the one on the bottom is blushing).

John_B and "In Memory of..." Sorry this was a tough one for you John. You have a nice shot though. A flag I presume? Nice detail and focus. It made me think of the flag folded for my dad when he passed away last year.

BadgerW and "Rangers Cap" - Nice shot to capture the detail in the stitching. Good ol' American baseball and red, white & blue! I wish I had a Braves' cap handy to do the same thing!

4hero and "Sexy Pizza" Great capture on the droplet! I know those can be tricky to do. I've never seen a pizza labeled as XXX Pepperoni though. :)

Monty28428 and "Lady Liberty" - Glad you made it in time this week! A very nice subject for this challenge and a very nice shot! Great idea!

Thanks again to all who participated. I enjoyed looking at all your shots! They were all very good. Choosing the top 3 is not easy but here goes...

3rd place goes to Monty and Lady Liberty. A clever subject and a nice shot!
2nd place goes to Badger and the Rangers Cap. I just loved the stitching detail!
and
1st place goes to 4hero and Sexy Pizza! Great job in capturing that moment in the drop and making sure you had the red and a sliver of blue in the background. Congrats, Neil!

I wanted to throw this theme out to see what you might come up with for it in macro. It was the theme for a local photography contest, and as it turned out, everything I shot was a macro, starting with the eye shot from the last challenge. If anyone wants to see the other shots I did, you can see them here (external link). The first three are the ones I entered. The fourth one didn't make the contest, but I still liked the shot.

I hope everyone has a great upcoming holiday (for those of us in the USA). Get out and shoot some fireworks with your cameras (but probably not a macro lens :))!

Congrats to 4hero. Excellent shot. I need to try and play around with water like that some day. Any tips for capturing it well?

Thanks to lavanut for the 2nd place nod. I bought that cap specifically for this challenge! :) I was at the game anyway, so it wasn't out of my way or anything... and I was glad to see that the cheapie $12 caps had the same nice stitching on the logo that the fitted $40 caps had :) I was a little unnerved when I got home that night and saw John_B's shot, since I knew mine was going to be pretty similar. But I found an interesting spot on the cap and it just worked out.

Monty, glad to see I'm not the only one with some of those oldy moldy 39 cent stamps still hanging around! Argh, I hate how they raise the price so often! It's "Forever" stamps for me, from now on!

woohoo!!! Thanks everyone, and thanks lavanut for picking mine!

This shot was taken a while back, and have not managed to re-create anything similar since. Must give it another go sometime with the better equipment I have now ;)

Thanks again,

Neil.
