Hey guys,
Well I have a question about using the Magnetic Lasso... Yes, I know how to use it and use :p But it seems when I go to lasso something it doesn't come out perfect. It's like it connects to points I don't want... But when I see other people pictures theirs came out perfect!

What am I doing wrong?
I go slow.
I make sure all points connect.
I defringe.

I'm out of ideas.. LOL

why dont you just use the regular lasso tool? i dont have a lot of luck with the magnetic one for those reasons.. at least with the regular lasso, i can controll where everything goes.

This tutorial (external link) is for the Pen Tool, but applies equally to the magnetic lasso tool. You'll never look back!

Is this a trick question?

Magnetic lasso is "less then useful" IMO.

Don't know what you're trying to do, but I would be *very* surprised if there weren't a better tool for the job...

I'm trying to cut myself out of pictures and really anything else I need to add to another picture.
I have some self portrait ideas that are going to need me to cut myself out of one picture and add it to another, and so far on the 3 portraits I have done, I'm not digging the magnetic lasso tools work..

Luckily the pictures I cut out I make tiny when they are added to the other pics so I've gotten away with it :D

Your best bet would be to seriously learn masking. But that would take time..

For now, have a look at a few of the "Monster" videos at Russell Browns website: Link (external link)

Scroll down to the CS3 section.

I agree with René.
But if the lasso will work for what you're trying to do, then this will work better:

magnetic is great when there is a very distinct contrast to seperate what you want and what you dont. The less the contrast the less it is worth useing. What kind of image are you trying it on?

once you have the selection, create a layer mask. switch to your pen tool and pain white or black on the mask to perfect it :)

Learn how to use channel masking, pen selection and also channel compositing. There is a few good tutorials on Lynda.com that covers all these techniques but masking is probably one of the most frustrating/difficult disciplines to learn in PS.

A good mask can take hours, if not days with some subjects and they are a work of art in themselves!

The Magnetic Lasso tool is best used on areas that have strong contrast. If you're doing hair, then masking is your only real option. Landscapes can be a lot easier than people.

I was going to start a thread but I figured I'd ask here - any links for great places to learn how to do serious masking? I'm tired of my stuff looking like crap when I use the lasso tools instead of doing it the real way.
