Allrighty guys heres the situation..

I just bought a t1i and the camera is having an issue.. Im wondering is it just mine or anyone else have this issue. I am wondering what are my options, and i'm looking for advice. ;)

When i shoot in manual, i can change the shutter speed with just the dial. And then to change the aperture setting I need to hold the AV/+/- button like many of you guys know and then move the dial.. And that is the problem.. there are times where it doesn't let me change the aperture setting.. Mine is probably a 30% time i cannot change it.. I usually can but sometimes it doesn't let me.. I just got the camera 3 days ago... So is anyone else having this problem or is it just mine... Things i have done is just shoot in another mode, preferably AV and then a couple mins later I change it back to manual and it works fine.. Most recent, I just turned off the camera, took out the battery and that was also a solution...

Correct me if im wrong but canon has not released a firmware for this camera... correct? Can anyone give me my options on what i can do? If anyone is wondering if this is really an issue for me? I would have to say yes and no.. I usually shoot in AV mode.. but sometimes manual comes in handy.. I also will be shooting a wedding in august 1st and this is one of the bodies i will be using.. So i dont really want to turn it in to canon and see if they can fix.. I would just like to practice as much as possible for right now and get used to this camera. One thing i am afraid of is i wont be able to even change the aperture setting at all...

Should i contact Canon?

And very quick, i got the camera from ebay new... Should i return the camera? Or is it something a firmware can fix? Plz let me no if u need more info... Help is very appreciated ;)

I don't think there is anything wrong with your camera. If you are in Av mode, then you simply turn the main dial to set the F-stop accordingly, your shutter speed is set automatically. You only need to press the additional button when in manual mode. This is one of the benefits of an XXD model which has a quick control dial in addition to the main dial.

Yes, this is what im talking about.. Im sorry if i did not make myself too clear.. Its only in manual where sometimes it doesn't let me change the aperture setting.. Sometimes while pressing the additional button and moving the dial it doesn't do anything...

Specifically what lens are you using? Perhaps you are trying to set an aperture not available? If it is the 18-55IS, then the max aperture is variable depending on focal length.

Two things that are likely are user error and user error. First, you need to make sure you firmly press the button, especially when it's new or old (can be stiff new, when it gets old it may be worn down). The other thing is, make sure you aren't trying to lower the aperture to a value lower than it's maximum aperture (likely f3.5, then f4, etc to f5.6 at 55mm if you only use the kit lens). Av and M are somewhat tied, and on my old rebel xt, changing aperture in Av changed it for M.

If both of these don't resolve your problem, just send it in to canon, they will take good care of it and give you back something good.

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

Nothing to be sorry about, that is what this forum is for. In all probability there is nothing wrong with your camera, you may just be misunderstanding a function. Trust me, even the most seasoned photographers have gaffs, some of which have made threads that have 3000+ posts on them! Anyway, that being said, there could be something wrong, but it would be in your best interest to rule out all possibilities before shipping it out and having to wait for your camera.

BTW, you would be served far better with the IS version of the 18-55 lens. The IS version is head and shoulders above the non IS.

Basroil,

I generally like you but you seem to be really abrasive lately. With all the absolutist comments about the ridiculous names of 50mm lenses (which you were actually wrong aboout..) and then telling people that is MUST be user error (which you still very well could be wrong about). Why not just tell him to make sure hes pressing the button down? And, if that still doesnt work, it very well could be a problem with the button..

I'm not sure what that means.

Check to make sure in each mode, Av and M, that you can choose any available aperture.

With the 50 all apertures will be available and with the 18-55 you won't have 3.5 available when you zoom in some and 4 won't be available when zoomed all the way in. So zoom out all the way and check to make sure all apertures are available.

When im on manual there's a box highlighting the shutter speed automatically.. Its telling me if i want to change the shutter speed. In order to change it i just have to move the dial..

k.. And if i want to change the F stop i have to hold the AV button and the box highlights the F stop... The problem is sometimes when I press down the button it doesnt highlight the F stop. The box keeps highlighting the shutter speed. It doesnt give me the option..

The good news is i played around with the camera for like an hour and everything seems ok right now.. I will update this if the problem comes back.

Sounds like a sticky button. Perhaps pressing it several hundred times will loosen it up.
