Your LCD has a protector over it that is really very tough. You don't need a protector for the protector.

If you somehow manage to mangle the original protector (and very few folks actually manage to damage theirs), it can be removed and replaced for something like $20 US. A suction cup is used to remove it. The new one comes with new double-sided tape for attaching it.

Your 50D already has one on it! Though not as obvious as those on a Nikon the screen on the Canon is covered by a user replaceable plastic cover. Don't worry about your screen, and don't waste your money on an aftermarket screen protector. Also, welcome to the forum!

Yeah, the big "screen" with "Canon" written on it isn't actually the screen.

You can get them from Canon.

I use a plastic LCD protector on all my screens. If the LCD is scratched and you go to resell it people want to take $50 off per scratch. I actually had a $3 protector keep the LCD from getting a nasty scratch one time. Put another $3 protector on it and saved $14.

I just get a cheap plastic sticker to keep fingerprints away. There's already a protector for scratches and such.

I have one of those on and it works pretty well on sunny days. I thought it was a little pricey at $40 but it's supposed to be high quality glass.

Us members of Southern Mediterranean decent, have an issue with what is referred to as "Nose Grease".
The LCD, straight from the box, is prone to this. I have to clean the LCD after a couple shots.
I use the Invisible Shield on my 40D. This tough layer of clear plastic film like problem handles this very well. I can shoot all day if necessary.
More importantly LCD clarity is great and does prevent LCD nicks that you see on many used cameras.
For $19.95, how can you loose.

I have used film lcd protectors: an expensive one from the States and a cheap version from Jessops. The better of the two by a mile has been .... Jessops.
