When on the Photomatix Pro tone mapping screen, having generated an HDR image, there are two basic choices - one is the Detail Enhance and the other is called Tone Compressor. Those experienced with the software, do you have any thoughts, suggestions, etc. about using one or the other?

Thank you, Mel

I use Detail Enhancer. Just never got any decent results from the other.

Thank you for your response. When I tried detail enhancer the photo did have a greater range of tones ... it did look somewhat over sharpened however.

Do you then follow-up with a noise reduction software?

I almost always use a noise removal action I got for CS3. It works very well, less heavy handed than programs like Neat Image.

tone compressor doesn't really create an HDR style image, I use detail enhancer --> lightroom 2 (color adjustments, sharpening, etc) --> CS4 for image touch ups and noise removal

this process is recommended by Scott Kelby and he has a great video tutorial about how to do HDR start-to-finish on his website, definitely worth checking out. http://www.kelbytraining.com …p-cs4-real-world-hdr.html (external link)

I bought it from Fred Miranda Software a couple years ago when I used CS2 and had a 1D Classic. It's great stuff and does an excellent job. Called 1D ISOR BR PRO.atn, it's no longer sold by them. A major failure in their thinking processes. It still works fine and I use it virtually every day, sometimes on every image, cause it just does such a good job. Here's their software page now (external link).
