Just got a smoking deal on the following:

Tamron AF 17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di-II LD SP ZL Aspherical (IF)

The Best Buy by my house has Tamrons on clearance. Not sure if this is for all locations but you all may want to check it out.

Got the above lens for 323.99 plus tax!!!!

I am looking for one of these right now. Pity though as my nearest Best Buy is a couple of thousand miles away :).

Those are good prices. I would never even check BB since their normal prices are so high.

I agree, not to mention their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. I would rather spend my money in our local camera store, but I happened to be there to look at a DVD and figured I would check the camera stuff out! Glad I did!

I quickly remembered this AM why I do all my photo shopping online! I stopped by a local Best Buy to see if they by chance had the 17-50 or 28-75 2.8s available. I looked in the display case and the only thing I saw was an open box 18-250 for the "reduced" price of $450US (BTW, the same as the new price at B&H). I spoke with the Rep in the camera department and he checked and it was the only Tamron they had in store.

But he did let me in on this little pearl of wisdom......

"These camera manufacturers state that you should ONLY use their lenses on the camera bodies and stay away from third party lenses. I have a nice Canon 18-55 that will be just as good."

Did a miss the email or memo from Canon on this?

I told him that I appreciated the offer but have 2 L lenses in my bag in addition to two of those nasty little third party Sigmas and the 18-55 kit lens was not what I was looking for. His mood quickly changed as it was obvious I wasn't a sucker and I was quickly dismissed with a "if there is nothing else I can help you with I have some other customers waiting".

Oh I'm sure he's right. When was the last time an electronics manufacturer recommended putting a 3rd party competitor on their equipment? They usually say, "use at your own risk" or "use could void the warranty".

So, yes the BB employee was probably right when he said that.

Well, if that is the case and Best Buy is only going to sell Canon/ Nikon lenses because that "is what the manufacturers recommend" then they need to pull their store brand knockoff camera batteries and grips off the shelf.

The day Canon refuses to service a body for me because I may have placed a Canon mount Sigma/Tamron/Tokina lens on it is the day I stop buying Canon.

Even though the employee might have been "technically" right, I think we all know that he was wrong.

In the past, Canon had pretty much totally dismissed front-focusing issues with my old camera due to a third party lens even though I had also sent mis-focused images from Canon lenses too. They CAN get downright surly (if not mind numbingly STOOOPID) when it comes to 3rd party lenses.
