Hey Guys

have a quick question.

Should I stop being so paranoid about getting jumped in Costa Rica? I'm going to be going there in about 2 weeks. I won't be hanging out in San Jose, but more out at 2 separate resorts. I want to bring my 300mm 2.8L IS, but is that basically a big sign saying "jump me" or do you think i'll be alright out on the tours I will be going on? Obviously walking around San Jose with that would be a big no-no.

Let me know your thoughts!

Scott

Costa Rica is probably safer than where you live now..... It's an awesome place - have fun and as with anywhere you go just be aware of your surroundings.

I'm sure you're right about the safety, probably not compared to where I live now. Little quiet town in Massachusetts! I hope I don't sound crazy. I was attacked twice in two days in Amsterdam! =] I'm sure I'd regret not taking it. Just be careful I guess!

Just curious what kind of tour pictures require that lens?

On tours and in resorts . . . I'd say you'll be pretty safe. I didn't have a 300 2.8 at the time, but I felt OK with my gear using normal precautions.

"Howler" - Howler Monkey.

And get a Better Beamer if you don't have one already. I should have used mine more than I did. Bright sky and backlit animals demand it. As does shooting around dusk, when they may be most active. The 300 f/4 pretty well lived with the 1.4x TC on it. With a faster lens or a 1-series I probably would have had a 2x on some of the time.

BTW - these were [I]all[/] 300 f/4 with the 1.4x TC.

Sorry ma'am:lol: but there's no need to get upset. I just thought of the 300 2.8 as more of a sports lens thats all.

I have been there many times and it is just like anywhere you may travel. Keep your head about you and do not wander where you do not want to be.

Little quiet town in Massachusetts! I hope I don't sound crazy. I was attacked twice in two days in Amsterdam! =]

I'd like to hear more about this.

I'm going to Amsterdam in a couple of weeks, planning on taking a 24-70, 100-400 and all the fixins. I'm going to Rekyavik after Amsterdam and I'm MUCH less worried about Reykjavik...

Coincidentally, I also live in a small town in Massachusetts.

Just be careful in Costa Rica. I have been there it is not too bad. But, if you don't take your big fast glass with you will be kicking yourself for years to come. I am kicking myself all the time about that.

Where im MA? Just be careful. I came back with 5 sticehs and a concussion. And with my camera gear. Stay out of the red light district with cameras (note. i was not there with mine either). And don't go around alone. Don't make eye contact with people who looks sketchy. Avoid shooting scary looking people too.
