OK, apparently there's some slight controversy whether it's OK to use
the Energizer lithiums in your digital camera.

Sombody said that some camera manufacturers specifically put in their
literature to NOT use these types of batteries.

Has anybody been using these on a regular basis without any side effects,
and if so what kind of equipment are you using them in?

Not just some manufacturers. The specific warning in the Canon PowerShot A80 manual is: "Never use manganese or lithium batteries, as these battery types may overheat in the camera".

Canon has specifically said since at least 2002 that lithium AA cells may be used in their Speedlite EX models. PowerShot models after the A80 contain neither the absolute proscription against use of lithiums nor a specific statement that their use is acceptable.

So the consumer is supposed to try it and see, amd hope these don't
damage the product?

Seems like many average consumers out there are going to use these
types of batteries in many different electronic devices since Energizer is
doing a decent job on getting the word out that this is THE battery to use
for "power hungry electronic devices" and they show digital cameras
in their advertising

I figured I'd spin this off into a separate thread since it's a good question
and to see if anybody on the board is is using these in their cameras.

Another idea I guess I could try is calling Canon tech support
and see what they say, and ask them if this voids the one year warranty.

If it doesn't void the warranty, then it should be OK...right?

I use energizer lithiums in all my electronics. My 580ex2, st-e2, my eos film body, flashlights, tv remotes, I've even used them in the AA cradle for my 20/30D bodies lol

only in my nikon sb-25 speedlights do they get overly hot so I only use my rechargable Ni-MH batteries.

Wow, so it sounds like you're sold on using this type of battery.
I guess this means you've not had any problems (other than the Nikon flash)

Plus, I think your equipment is alot more expensive than my Canon PowerShot SX1IS
which means you must really be comfortable with this.

I use Energizer lithiums in a Power Shot S5 IS with no problems. They last forever, work great, and are always ready to use, no matter how long the camera has sat unused. I also carry a set in my bag as backup for my flash Eneloops in case I run them down.

Is there any major differences between the Canon PowerShot S5IS and the Canon PowerShot SX1IS ???

Can I assume that if they work OK in your camera, they would be OK in mine?

what kind of batteries came with the camera?

yeah, I trust them. I used to use only Duracell but IMO the extended power and lithium they offer aren't nearly as long lasting.

That would be my assumption as well. I would use them if I had a SX1 IS (which I am considering getting). They last for hundreds of shots in my S5 and are always ready to go even though I use that camera only occasionally.

I used NiMH batteries for both my S2 IS and S5 IS, and carried around energizer lithiums as a backup in case I forgot to charge my batteries or they drained off too much opwer not being used. They are very light and last a long time in storage. I only had to use them a couple of times, but I had no problems with them.
