Taken at WPAFM in Ohio. The lighting there is abysmal but I knew that going in so I brought a tripod. The really difficult aspect, imo, was that they packed so many planes in the hangers that it is practically impossible to take pictures of one plane without 2-4 others visible in unnatural positions in the background. This is one of the shots I could get without too much clutter in the background.

It was great seeing so many historic planes. I just wish they could spread them out a little more.

Looks like you did a good job. Why didn't you bump the ISO up a bit? I haven't been there since 2006. It's a tough place to get good shots. But lots of great planes and history.

Thanks! I actually shot some at iso 1600 without the tripod. I had to use f/2.8 with this strategy but DOF was more than adequate with 16-35 focal length.

Thanks!

I would love to see one of these fly in person. I think the only MiG I have seen fly is a MiG 15.

Andrew... That would be this one from last year at THUNDER. Mike and I will be there at the PhotoPit, say Hi....

For those who wonder, I talked to the owner and sent him a few shots of it. Its for sale (last I heard), so if you want one, it can be had....

If that is Will Wards Mig-21 then thats the one that will be at TOM. I know he will be flying both the Mig 17 and Mig 21. I wont be doing the photopit this year but will be there all weekend.

I'm wondering why you asked that when he had a tripod & the shots look good at ISO 100?

Considering the MoUSAF is essentially lit just slightly better than a cave, I'd say you done good.

1) Might have taken a step to the right and frame out the truss at camera right. You've also got quite a bit of dead space above.

2) Kind of an in-between framing here. Nose is cut off as is half the nose gear.

FWIW, I'd approach shooting here in two ways:
1) Wide Angle to get entire airframes (and yes, the backgrounds can be cluttered but that wouldn't bother me all that much. In some cases, you could deliberately underexpose by a half stop or so or even do some exposure blending in post to bring just the subject up a bit.)

2) I'd use probably a 135mm and concentrate on Nose Art, Placards and specific details. I'd shoot these wide open to draw the eye via selective focus at very shallow DOF. If you go really shallow, you can have all kinds of fun with aircraft parts: http://www.pbase.com/flyingphotog/image/111150198 (external link)

Tired and not thinking clearly. Doesn't matter much on a tripod now does it. Gets crowded in some of the hangers there and there really isn't room to stay set up in some spots. It is good that they allow you to use tripods though.
