Haven't had much luck lately with the birds. When a 55-250 is the longest lens you have getting a good bird shot can be kind of frustrating. I feel almost embarrassed to post any images after seeing the quality of shots in this forum. Also noticed that getting a clear shot is a lot harder in the summer, when the trees are in bloom. Until I get a longer lens I guess I'm stuck with whatever lands on my porch.

I'm fairly pleased with this shot. Mostly due to the contrasting colors which make the Dove stand out. Was shot at ISO 1600 on my Xsi. Lost a lot of feather detail after running some noise reduction though.

Thought this one was nice also. A little too busy though.

I must say I'm pretty jealous of the variety of backyard birds some of you have. I'm stuck with Mourning Doves, Grackles, Starlings, House sparrows, and Robins.

Well thanks for looking.

I wish that was an option. None of them work with ef-s lenses though. Thanks for the comment.

That first shot is sweet! The background really makes the bird stand out. And doves are very pretty birds as well.

Set yourself up some feeders near the house, and sit patiently and shoot from cover. Heres what I did in my conservatory to give me a hide.

Thanks JGR. Artyman, I have set up some feeders but the variety I want just isn't there. I have to venture out to the parks, woods, or nature centers to find the birds I want to photograph. Which I enjoy doing very much, even if I don't get any good shots. My backyard is basically overrun with House sparrows and Mourning doves, with the occasional visit from the others mentioned in my first post.

I was going to say, the house sparrows will keep most other birds away. They are little pests. I have had some luck in getting rid of them by changing the feed I put out. The bad thing is, the little buggers learn to like anything after awhile.

Great job on the first shot Rick with perfect focus on the eye & a great BG. Bird photography is addicting but sure is a lot of fun!

Two nice shots Rick, I'll bet if you took some time and sat outdoors in your yard 3-4 times a week, you'll probably see a few dozen different species of birds in a year.. Keep a log and hopefully photo's of the ones you can capture.. I've logged 34 different species in 13 months and I thought I had a handful at best around here..

I keep count of the birds I have shot in my yard only. Only ones I have pics of. After 3 years, I am up to 42. I do spend a lot of time doing this though. I shoot out my open windows most of the time and the camera and tripod is set up right next to my desk. Putting the time into it does help. :)
