How does the Elinchrom 17" reflector compare to other BDs in your experience? I was planning to buy the Speedotron 22" with grid, but the cost to ship it to my place from B&H is $150, so I am having second (multiple actually) thoughts about buying it. Since I can order the Elinchrom dish from the local distributor the cost will be the same as buying it from B&H minus the shipping cost, so its a decent deal. How does the 17" differ from the 22", is it size only? If I decide to buy it which finish should I get, silver or white? Sadly there is no grid available. Please share your insight, thanks!

Hi!

Apart from the lack of grid (for the 17" size) the Elinchrom is very well buildt and will fit natively on your strobes along with the option to use diffrent deflectors and sock.

The silver will give you slightly more "contrast" and will enhance specular highlights more.

That's what I personally was thinking and I am glad that you have confirmed it. In fact, I just found out that the silver BD has a narrower light spread (55 degrees) compared to the white BD (80 degrees). I guess this makes the silver reflector more appealing especially that no grids are available.

Well it depends on what you want to achive, but for more direction and a more "contrast" charachter the silver will fit the bill nicely.

I dont have the mini, i have the 27" white one with the sock, deflectors and grid.

Kindest

Just like chosing a softbox, the 44cm isnt big enough for what i want to do. Elinchrom dont make any grids for their BD at the moment.

I have the 17" white and it's been too contrasty for me to use. I have kept it though because I love the silver disc to use with my Deep Octa. Yeah I know I can get them separately. I keep hoping I'll find a use for it.

I have the 17" white also. With the white sock it is very similar to a softbox. With the silver reflector and no sock it will give more contrast and specular light. It needs to be directed sharply down (or up) to control the light otherwise it will throw the light everywhere (which can be taken advantage of too). A grid would be a nice addition for it regardless of how its mounted.

For those that really want a grid for their 17" Elinchrom dish one can modify just about any grid to work. (given its larger of course)

Requires some measuring ,cutting, drilling, and fasten a few rivets.

For people famililar with tools its a fast and easy mod.

Well i dont have the 17" dish...i have the 27" and for that i already have a grid that works. :-)

But apart from the honeycombgrid it self being a bit fragile the tooling required to cut it to desired size (using a template from your measurements of course) shortening the metal "frame" to fit the new size and fastening the frame with a rivet (often a metal clip overlapping the joints)Shouldnt be to hard.
