Every time I turn on my external harddrive lightroom starts up and wants to import photos. Ive already checked off the "import dialog when a memory card is inserted" box but after restarting Lightroom its checked on again.

Somebody help me!

What OS?

On OSX:

Go to Applications > Image Capture

Open the prefs. Select "No application" here:

There are some reports of some people finding that setting not 'sticking' on some Windows installations.

Have you checked your Auto Import settings?

File --> Auto Import --> Auto Import Settings --> Watched Folder

Just make sure it's not set for your HD.
Hope that helps.

You could try holding down the SHIFT key when you attach the drive. This should stop Autoplay springing to life and will hopefully let Lightroom continue sleeping.

What drive letter do you have assigned to the drive? Do you have the operating system set up to assign a letter?

Start > Default Programs (on the right) > Change AutoPlay Settings. Set "Pictures" and "Mixed Content" to whatever you prefer other than LR 2.4 then make sure you click Save, don't just close the window with the "Red Cross".

Why it changes the default without asking is beyond me and a bit naughty of Adobe.

Could do something with that, especially if it's a or b. But don't know why it would consider the drive as a memory card.

Probably not the case here, and I've never seen it happen.

Try going to the drive, and checking the hidden files for autorun.ini or inf or something of that nature. If you find it, delete it. Also, go to the autorun options menu and make sure that it's disabled for drives (I personally have everything turned off, but you can set it so certain things open with different programs, likely lightroom was set to open new drives)

I don't hate macs or OSX, I hate people and statements that portray them as better than anything else. Macs are A solution, not THE solution. Get a good desktop i7 with Windows 7 and come tell me that sucks for photo or video editing.

I have 4 external harddrives, it does this to each drive when I turn it on. It has something to do with the insert memory card automatic import feature of Lightroom. I cant turn it off. Everytime I do it turns itself on, I can confirm it because the checkbox for this feature is checked on after I have turned it off.
Its no biggie tho I can live with it, I'm used to crap software by now, even by the big guys.

Uninstall, remove anything left over in app data as well as every LR2 file other than the catalog, then reinstall. Should clear out all settings and let you make changes to them. And your librarys will be intact, though you will need to remake previews (minor issue).

Im also getting this error.
Using Windows 7 (7260 x86). Version 2.3 was working fine.

EDIT: just tried Hanks solution and it seems to have fixed my problem. At least LR2.4 isnt opening whenever i connect my ipod now.

I changed the autoplay behavior of windows, but guess what everytime I set it to no action and save. It switches back to lightroom as a default.

That's a permissions problem in Windows then. LR only changes them once on install.
