I was out for about an hour of free time last week and in an area where I found several red wing blackbirds. Then suddenly I spot this hawk flying up the canyon. With my 20D and 75-300mm, I just aim and shoot, hoping that the auto-focus would find something.

In looking at the photo (Photo 1) initially, I didn’t consider it a keeper. I zoom in and it’s out of focus. But I do realize that I have caught a fantastic moment in the hawk’s flight. If I had gotten the focus, this could have been stunning. So I take the RAW image into PSE and try to adjust and sharpen and its just isn’t getting much better. Then I decide to try something really different and make an attempt at something artsy (Photo 2). All I did was remove the color and manipulate the lighting with an angled spot. It’s not spectacular, but fun none the less. It was then I realized I should post these for some advise.

Here’s where I need your help. What would be your ideas for making something creative out of an image that is really poor, like this example. I know you guys PS with the best of them and I’m just trolling for creative possibilities for this shot, not particularly to correct it. What would you do? ….tossing it out is a valid option.

Thanks for the help.

I played with it a bit, but there's not a lot to work with in a small jpg. You can probably do better with the bigger original file. One idea I had was to make the background grain a blue. I may play with a bit tonight. (No promises) ;-)a

Frank,

Thanks for taking a shot at it. No worries, if you come with any other ideas that's great. As I said.....I just kinda trolling for thoughts.

Geoff
