I am trying to gain a little business, so I thought I would make a flyer to send out to my neighborhood for advertising. Let me know what you think.

I get enough junk mail as it is. All goes directly into the recycle bin without even making it into the house. Your flyer would get the same treatment.

ok the price thing is my problem i have read countless threads on new people asking what to charge, and they get the response charge what you think you are worth. In my opinion my work is worth as much as the client is willing to pay, so that leaves me with no answer.

So what would you tell me as far as adjusting my prices, I live in the Atlanta area.

Thanks

The price is relative...if you can cover your costs at your price then it is fine, look to others in your area to identify the market for what you are doing.

Quit the illusion of "cheap", "low end" or "high end"...it differs by street, by region, by county, by country.

I say go for it; put it in a supermarket or a local gym. I wouldn't mail it around, as people just throw away junk

For my area I am considered "mid-range/high"

Compared to LA or New york or Vancouver, however, I am low-end

I might change "1.5 hours of shooting time" to "UP TO 1.5 hours of shooting time" A lot of people will be thinking "I dont have 1.5 hours to do a photo shoot. And will feel like they are paying for something they are not getting. Like paying for 6 feet of carpet, but only bringing home 4 foot. Even if they only need 4 foot, they feel cheated that they were not given the full 6. But if it is "UP TO" it does not matter as they are not missing anything. Any time under 1.5 is the same cost. Again if they only need 4 foot of carpet, but 6 is the same price, they will only take what they need. Subtle difference I know. But simple psychology can go a long way sometimes.

And I would leave off the additional charges. Definatley mention it when they call and schedule. But I would not include it in the flyer. Again simple psychology.

Reword the "as many poses" line. Is someone really going to say "OK that is enuf poses. We are going to finish the session with only this pose".

Thank you for the advise I will make those changes.

Many people say look to other photographers in the area to choose what to make my prices, how do i go about doing this, do i just call up photographers and ask them what they charge for shoots, is this not considered rude?

quick google searches, etc. for finding stuff around your area. Usually they will have it on their site. You could just call as a "customer" and just say you are searching for a photographer and what their fees are. I do that a lot for business cards and stuff I make. A local guy does $40 an hour for design plus cost of printing.

Prices are relative as people have said. The only real other competition I have is based a framing gallery and they charge $365 just for the fee to shoot. A 2 time package for toddlers is $1200 and their prints are astronimically high ($60 for an 8x10).

I charge MUCH under that and it would only cost me maybe $50 for a sr. shoot and my prints are way lower ($8 for 8x10). I also don't do it for a living to keep things open. I just have my gear and do it for fun/as a hobby. That could change...but right now I'm making as much money as I need/want to pay for gear and give people great pictures for what I believe is relative for me.

However, all it takes is for one person not to throw it in the bin and phone you up.

Surely if you post 100 fliers, 97 people throw it in the bin, 3 people call you up.. Is it worth it? .. Yes

In the U.S.A., and we buy a lot of useless crap, 3% would be an excellent response, it seems to be closer to 1% most of the time. And that's just the response; you still have to make the sale.

I would probably go to the trouble of being more focused; if the neighborhood is new and cheap then there will be more children so maybe I would focus more on mom's and their kids, etc. etc. Make sure you have a nice website they can visit.

i am very confident that i will get at least a couple responses in my neighborhood due to the fact that there are many little kids, i already no of a couple that was looking while back for a photographer to do pics of their kids, i kept my mouth shut at the time because i did not feel as confident in my work then.

If you are going to target parents with kids. Then put pics of kids on the flyer. You have to advertise what you want to do. You can change the flyer all you want, as you change targets. But you want to make your ad match your target.

FWIW... From a design perspective on this flyer, I do not like the typography chosen. I do not think it does you any favors as far portraying your business or your message.

If you are posting these on a bulletin board at the local grocery store or some other community board or advertising method being able to stand out from the rest is the most important visual element. I would try and go for a bolder font with some more contrast in the overall composition.
