Hi,

I have noticed that every picture I have taken with my 40D in the past couple months has a tiny red (actually two) pin prick type dots in the exact same place. No matter what lens I use.

Is this a burned out pixel or something?

A camera.
Trinkets galore.

You said it in your title, hot pixel. Not sure what a dead pixel would look like, I would think it would be black in photos?

Try this http://blog.willshootphotography.com/2008/10/canon-50d-hot-p.html (external link) and post back your outcome. I have done it and I had 4 hot pixels, I am now down to one.

Definitely sounds like a hot pixel.

The fix in the above link works like a charm too. At least it did for me.

ive done that "fix" about 15 times with no luck, my 4-5 hot pixels are still there. anyone do t hat sequence for longer than 5 minutes, would it really help to leave it that long? how many times did it take you for it to work and how long (time wise) did you use?

I first noticed 4 without careful examination but now that I loked all over the image I have about 6, after running this sequence.

Can someone explain to me how that "fix" works? I'm just curious.

me too because youd thinkt hat leaving hte shutter open for long periods of time would make the already "hot" pixels hotter but im not sure if the sensor is actually on at this point.

The sensor isn't on during the cleaning so I'm curious as to what good leaving it open for so long will do to "fix" hot pixels.

I tried to get an answer to this back when I first heard about it. A few theories, but nothing concrete was all I got. But it worked, so who am I to argue.

From what I understand, after manual sensor cleaning it remaps the pixels on the sensor. I'm not sure if thats true but I know it works.

A red, blue or green pixel is known as a "defective pixel" (basically a stuck pixel). A hot pixel is white. A dead pixel is black [edit].

A defective pixel is sometimes goes by itself, but if it is persistent you can get your CMOS recalibrated by Canon to get rid of it. Free under warranty
