Here is one from me. It's a nice camera but the non IS kit lens becomes boring after a while.

you can have a 18-55 IS pretty cheap on the used market nowadays

Thanks, I know that but I am not sure if there will be noticeable improvements in image quality from the non IS to the IS version. I am actually thinking of getting the new 15-85mm or replacing the whole thing with 500D or 50D and this lens.

Why replace it with a T1i or 50D? Look further into lenses.

Because low light 1600ISO has a lot of noise, and the 50D's 3200 looks better than our 1600ISO?

Faster FPS, better sensors...really a long list.

Some stuff you don't need, but others...you can't fix with just a lens.

Honestly going from XS to T1i is pointless, save up for 50D or 7D

He seems to be looking for image quality, and buying a 50D is barely going to change a thing. Those extra features are great in helping you get the picture, but they're not going to change the quality. If you'd like to spend $900 and be able to shoot a few extra frames a second with the non-IS kit lens, then great, go for it. I'll spend that $900 on the 17-55 and use the XS any day.

I will but I quite like the movie option of the higher models and I will be going overseas for a holiday this year and the video feature will come handy. This aside, on the weekend I played with a relative's 500D and I liked the bigger screen and the better image quality that it showed on the live view but I am not sure if that is the image it will output as well and I didn't get the chance to look at that downloaded from the camera. This is what has confused me the most.

However I am still looking for a good walkaround lens and waiting for some reviews on the Sigma 17-70 OS, the Canon 15-85 is a bit out of budget.

The Image quality you see is just because of the bigger LCD at the back. When you upload them to a computer together with the images in your XS, i bet you will not notice a big difference.

i think its just gadget lust/envy :D we all go through that :D

anyway, pair your XS with a good lens and your images will definitely be better than a 500D with a kit lens :D

I think the 50D has a higher resolution LCD screen in the back.

I'm quite happy with my XS and 40D. both are nearly identical with the exception of a few advantages (higher ISO, more fps) for the 40D.

I myself have been in "gadget envy" over the 24-70 f/2.8 L lens.... I started saving up for it, but then I think I may wait to get it. I'm really eye-balling the 50mm f/1.4 now. :-)

While the T1i is a fine camera, like others say it isn't that much difference your sorta jumping laterally, if you want to upgrade then go 7D with 1080P video, I personally would get a dedicated camcorder for any trip I was taking and not depend on my DSLR those are for captures. As for walk around I have the Sigma 17-70 and it is great wide angle lens and very sharp, you could get one used here on the Marketplace section for about 230-250, not sure what you shoot and what lenses you have now as well as budget, but you can't go wrong with the 55-250 again not sure what you have now but thats a lens you should have and makes a fine walk around

Hey Phil, I played with my buddies 50mm 1.4 and WOW!!!! razer sharp and great bokeh, I just picked up the 85 1.8 and was deciding between the two but decided I wanted a bit more reach, but you can't go wrong with either. I sold my 55-250 to fund this purchase :) Like you I love my one two punch of the 40 and the XS , but I must admint I used the 40 most of the time and my wife uses the XS

To be honest the perfect upgrade for me from the kit lens was the Tamron 17-50 2.8! Great build quality, better colours and contrast plus 2.8 constant Aperture :) Plus it can be had for around £200.

noisy, slow-hunting AF really turned me down. then there is the QC that really turned me off.

dashing for the 17-55 instead...
