Went skating with a friend on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa tonight. I wasn't sure if I would bring my camera cuz photography on a date isn't the best idea. I then decided to limit my shots and although I'm not a "people photographer/portraits" kind of guy, maybe taking some photos of her would be interesting. Glad she liked it, and glad that I brought my camera with me as I took one of my most beautiful shot to date (first one).

As you are skating on the canal, you come to go under a bridge where they hanged some art on the bridge's walls. Very cool idea.

Experienced bouncing my speedlite on the brick walls all around.

Which one of those do you guys like the most? (I desaturated and darkened the hat and the background a bit on the second one):

I just bought one about a week and a half ago.

I'm new to DSLR. I love this camera. If nothing else, it's teaching me photography. My last camera (a good one) was a Canon SX 110 is. It was a great camera and could go fully manual, but it processed the images in the camera, and that takes a bit of the artistry out of it. Plus, you can't compose properly with a P&S.

My pictures are nothing great, but I'm having a great time learning.

These are a couple of my best so far (nothing special, but it's a start):

Great pics. I am a newbie to DSLR. Do you mind sharing some techniques you used for these pictures i.e. settings on camera, lens use, any post processing at all on these photos?

Thanks

I have Rebel XS. I am using it with two lenses namely kit lens 18-55 and 50 mm 1.8.

I know that this question is discussed again and again and that there are so many choices and so many messages about different solutions that i am completely lost and confused.

My questions are :

1. If you were me which one would you select for a city trip?

2. Can you advise me just one general purpose "attach and go" lens (for portraits, the one with low light performance for hand held shots, for getting sharp images).

I must add one more thing : the solution must be the cheapest one at the same time.

Thanks for replies.

There is absolutly nothing wrong with the two lenses that you have for what you have mentioned, these are the two that you want to have to start out with, they will do you well. If you want to add to that setup then I would get a flash at the minimum a Speedlite 430, but if you want a lens then I would get the 55-250 can't go wrong with that, it could be had now used for about 250-275. Great walk about lens

I am going to another race this weekend, I am going to put all your suggestions on paper so I can try them all. I have one more question though. The sponsors of the race liked my pictures and want me to take pictures for their website. They also want me to take pictures of the winners in the winners circle. What would your suggestions be on the settings for that. The lighting is low and the only flash I have is the one on the camera. I wasn't sure if I should try it in auto or if I needed to set the settings to something else. I really don't want to disappoint everyone with my pics. Thanks in advance.

Here a few shots that I got of some intermural basketball and volleyball at CPP with my kit lens :D. Think I did pretty well. Can't wait to get a hold of a 70-200 f4L though.

Some shots from a friend's bday party. Figured its some practice for flash.
Shot with: 1000D, 18-55 kit lens, 430exII, Alcohol bottle diffuser. All have 100iso
wannnntttt wider lens (tokina 11-16 f2.8 )

Interesting. May I see a picture of your setup?

I'd LOVE a diffuser but I don't think that a 5¢ piece of plastic should be worth 30$!!!

Only thing I disagree with there is the price of a used 55-250. I frequently see them in the classified section on potn for around $200. And each time I'm tempted to buy it. One of these times I will! (But I'll probably get me an ultra-wide angle first).

I second this. I'd love to see a picture of an alcohol bottle diffuser. I've heard a few people mention them and am dying of curiosity about how it work.
