sorry I usually put reasoning behind my post...forgot to on that one :P

I said 70-200f4L and 1.4x just because I believe it would give you the best versatility and sharpness and value...idk something about a lens that spans 50-500 that makes me question the sharpness if most pro's use primes. Also the 1.4 is only going to bump the stop down to a 5.6 still perfectly fine for outdoor shooting. And that paired with a crop body is going to get you a 2x increase...so you are going to get the equivalent of shooting a 400..and still all L glass :P

Thanks, interesting thoughts / ideas. Funny enough I almost went with the 70-200f4L but bottled it due to price and concern that it wouldn't give me the reach I wanted, but maybe....I will have to think about it some more

No. But for the budget and FL you mentioned, I can't think of any other lens others on here recommend more than those two.

Thanks again....it was someone on here that commented that this may result in soft images, so that put me off.

Guess what I really want is L glass that is priced in the hundreds, rather than thousands :)

I wouldn't go tele without the IS... even for the price. but that's just me; the kind of photography I do --> urban photography.

what you mean by "urban photog"? arch? PJ?

Sure IS is sick but for most of photo history people got along without it. I don't have problem shooting my AE-1 with a 200

urban photography is all about fixed objets, so if you go tele, you really get a bigger keeper rate with IS. It's not rocket science. Even if you shoot people, it's candids that don't move much. Sometimes it can be in not well lit places... so even at f2.8 you wouldn't cope with the slow shutters.

furthermore, the longer you are in focal distance, the more IS is likely to help you, even at 70mm. I'll def wait and save up for the IS... crucial to me.

It doesn't really help if you're doint studio (portraits), landscapes on tripod or sports tho...

wait are you basing this opinion off of the kit lens and telephoto kit lens?

Thank you all for the suggestions on which setting to use for a indoor race. I took 291 pictures last night and most of them came out pretty good. I know they can still be better but they are better than they were. Here are a couple.

double the price... same lens, body construction and size.

I'll pass on. I'm about to pull the trigger on a 7D

I mean... the new features are nice but nothing to justify spending 1K$ if you already have an XS
