I recently bought the xs, and so far, I am in love!
However, I have been shooting in AV mode, and whenever i attempt
to take a self portrait(using the 10sec timer & a tripod)
the focus isn't right. Am I forgetting to do something? Is there someway
to focus lock?
I know this may seem like a stupid question, but I would appreciate
some tips!
Thanks in advance!

Maybe you can try focusing it manually then take the pic with the timer. When you click the shutter button it must have focused on the background then when you get in the picture you because out of focus.

2 things you could try, either get someone to take the shot for you (they can set the autofocus on you) or if there is enough daylight, set the aperture to f13 or f16, something with a big f number and half press the shutter so that your chosen aperture will provide a fast enough shutter to freeze any movement (even something like your movement from breathing can cause blur)

that's because it autofocuses before the shot, so it's focusing on whatever is behind you. Put something where you are going to be, manual focus on it then hit the timer.

Just had another go at editing a pic I posted a couple of days back, I'm not 100% happy with it due to the grainy-ness in the dark blue at the top right, but I cant figure out how to fix it :o

You going to anything at the Olympics? I hear the camera policy is pretty strict.

I went to a 'Victory Ceremony' Last weekend....and I had no problem bringing in my camera.
I know for the opening ceremonies it was bad:)
Just uploading my photos now ;)

hello everyone...

i just discovered this forum and i think i'll be a main stay. i have backread up to page 35 only. =( there's still a loooong way to go and am afraid, doing so i might forget i need to take pictures. lol. i had my canon 1000d last september as a gift. from reading the first posts, only then i found out about this IS in a 18-55mm kitlens and too bad, mine isn't. anyway... i could live with it.

i just purchased a 55-250mm IS recently and then, i now know the difference an IS makes. :D

if there is a level lower than a beginner, i guess that's me. haha. all i can claim is, i have been promoted from someone who loves to be in the picture to someone who loves taking pictures.

here are my photos by the way: http://www.shuttercal.com/calendar/stol3nshots/ (external link)

Kit lens at 29mm, ISO 100, f11, 1 second exposure taken right after the sun disappeared. Used a triped, locked the mirror, 5 second timer.

one of my last pictures here cuz im getting a 7D tonight. I'm still playing with some in PS and will upload them later on.

now this one has nothing TOO fancy, but I thought the bokeh was great. nifty-50 @ 1.8 on the Rideau Canal in ottawa on a skating night. Those are lights from a Beavertails shack.

Have fun with the 7D. I've had fun playing with it in Future Shop a number of times now, lol. You gonna sell the XS or keep it as a backup?

Yeah I almost pulled the trigger yesterday. There is an open box at 1700$ at the futureshop in the east end (gloucester) if you're interested :p

Probably going to keep the XS until I buy some other lenses. I'll be using the same ones I have now until I can afford the 17-55. Other than that, I might bring it on vacation or other places where my 7D is more at risk of being stolen or broken.
