Both the 18-55 and 75-300 come in different flavours. The 18-55 which is packaged with the 1000D is indeed an IS lens, but the 75-300 that some retailers offer cheaply when you purchase a 1000D does not have IS or USM (it is the cheapest version of the telephoto lens)

It's an alright telephoto though if you understand it's limitations. You absolutely need to have a shutter speed of 1/focal length or greater, which requires a lot of lighting, and it is a bit soft above 225/250mm zoom. If you go into the purchase knowing that, it's not such a bad lens.

If you're looking for a cheap telephoto to add into your lineup, I highly suggest the Canon 55-250 IS telephoto for your first one. It's extremely sharp and has a great IS system, and should last you until you purchase a 75-300IS+USM or 70-200L lens(Should you choose to purchase a higher end telephoto)

Very helpful stuff thanks. To be honest I'm not wildly fussed about the telephoto lens, I prefer close up stuff, but my other half wants one for airshows as he's in the air force. Think I'll just leave it for him to decide! I've been having a good read of this thread and have decided I need the Canon 50mm 1.8 far more! That seems to be producing some stunning pics.

If he wants to shoot air show stuff, he will be using a fast enough shutter speed, and getting enough light to use that lens, but the lens will likely show it's flaws in picture fidelity when you crop them to get the planes how you'd like them.

I hope you like the 50 1.8, it's a great way to learn about primes and what they can allow you to do, but I never use mine as I think the 50 is too long for what I wanted the prime for. I'm buying a Sigma 30 1.4 sometime this year when my fiance forgives me for picking up so much gear in such a short span of time.

If you're not opposed to buying used gear, you can likely pick up the 75-300 on the POTN marketplace for between $80-100~ to try it out, or the 55-250 for between $150-200~.

x2 on the 55-250 over the 75-300. lots of places offer that as a kit, but the 75-300 is kinda poor by comparison to the 55-250. If you really want to go to 300, then the 70-300 IS USM is what you want. runs about $400-$500. Otherwise, pick up the xs kit with the 18-55 IS lens, and find a 55-250 online, or somewhere fairly cheap.

Justin, great stuff. Everything looks so nice and sharp. Jealous of the warm weather and photo ops, too.

[QUOTE=Justin D;9663212]Some new shots wandering around Vancouver today, enjoying the olympic atmosphere. Really wish I had a telephoto! I am also starting to feel like I am using to much USM on my photos...

Thanks Ashely,

Me and my wife went downtown during one of the first days and they had that ugly chain link fence up. Getting a good shot was impossible. Now they have holes in the fence and a nice viewing platform you can wait in line for. The wait time wasn't to bad, only 40 minutes or so. You get a close unobstructed view. This was taken with the kit lens.

I wish they had done that when we were over.....They had the chain link fence and the olypic billboards on the fence. None of my shots are good. I wish I lived over there so I could get another crack at it...Oh well...I just admire your shot ;)

The UK 1000D, usually doesn't come with a I.S. lens. although the rebel does seem to come I.S.
