yeah but those shots have nothing to gain by having them centered. look super snapshotish imo

I'm okay with the flower shot but how or better yet, what to gain from rules of thirds with a lamb and a bunch of grass? There is nothing else in the image, moving the lamb left/right would do what?

I agree. I like the lamb picture.

Most all of us on this forum have some nice equipment and go out and take pictures simply because it's fun. And more times than not we bring back some pretty fine looking stuff.

I frame the shot as it looks best to me and shoot. Rule of thirds or not, this is a picture I am taking to show to family and friends and capture memories, not to enter in a contest.

The object of the exercise, at least for me, is to enjoy taking pictures.

I agree completely... but aren't we here for improving as well?

I mean... since I subscribed here, I've gained so much in techniques and framing and finding subjects and all... no need to spit on that! C&C is gold to me.

I think composition is entirely subjective, just because some people like using the rule of thirds, doesn't mean everyone should use it. I personally never use it and I don't think it detracts from my photos.

The rule of thirds, while does not necessarily need to be used with every shot, when followed will more often then not result in a benefit. The rule itself is a simplified application of the golden ratio (phi), which has not only been used by artists and architects for thousands of years, but is also found all over in nature itself. This ratio seems to naturally appealing to mankind, and just because something is subjective, doesn't mean that this rule shouldn't (again more often then not) be applied. The rule is a near universal for thousands of years, it seems to supersede subjectivity.

lololol, try telling that to an art/ photog teacher

The guy above me has a good bit about the rule of thirds. And btw you guys that are like "rules are meant to be broken", you have to get good/ master the rules before you break them. It's like writing in school, you're taught to not do some things but once you know why and are adept at writing you realize why you don't always use the rules and when they are necessary.

I'm not saying a basic technique like framing has to not be fun. I have fun taking photos also, cause I'm certainly not ANYWHERE (few xxk off) near getting paid enough to take pics and not like it.

It's like writing in school, you're taught to not do some things but once you know why and are adept at writing you realize why you don't always use the rules and when they are necessary.

No one is trying to tell a teacher. Just because you're in school learning all the rules does not mean everyone else has to follow those rules.

This thread was started to share photos from the xs not as a critique thread (that would be "critique corner"). If someone posts and ask for a critique that's one thing, but most people here just enjoy taking photos and want to share; they're not planning a gallery showing.

And remember art is subjective, what you might see as technically imperfect could be another's treasure. Please keep that mind when you're throwing out your opinions unsolicted. Maybe, instead just pointing out what you see as wrong with a photo, you could temper your suggestions by pointing out the positives as well? I say this, because to me you come across as harsh and as a know-it-all and this may not be your intention at all.
