Not sure how great it is, but I like it so...

I like your surfer shot but more importantly, YOU like your surfer shot.

Take pictures you like, accept criticism but remember, you're the only one that has to like them in the end.

Sweet shot!

This camera seems really nice. I have a little sister who's turning seventeen this summer. Shes always been interested in photo and lately she have been asking me for advice when it comes to buying a camera. I thought I would surprise her and get her a 1000d as a birthday gift.

What lens would you recommend to get with it? I really like what I have seen from the 55-250. Seems like a tack sharp EF-S lens.

I don't know any specific lens for that situation - but I think for a beginner (like I still consider myself) having a couple of lenses that get you a taste of multple focal lengths is great, even if if they are not the fastest lenses. I got the 18-55 and the 75-300 with my kit and I am glad I did. They are neither the best (far from it) but it let me try almost everything I want to try at the start. My first addition was the nifty 50 so I could do more indoor ambient light. Sorry, that my recomendation isn't one lens, but like I said, I'm glad I went that way. Now I really have a better idea what I want and need when I upgrade.

You have a very valid point! She could get my nifty fifty since I am getting the sigma next month or the L this summer and the 18-55 IS is really nice aswell. So one prime and one 18-55 with the camera and a telezoom for christmas?

Think I have found the solution!

might buy a Canon 70-200 EF 70-200mm zoom 1:4 L USM lens. Has anyone had much success with this lens on their XS?

Any "L" on any Canon DSLR is amazing, on 5D2's they are just wow :P
Many people even have a Xti and the F4L which still gives great photos!

Lurking here for a while and I feel I need to post my 2 cents. Got a 1000D with 18-55 IS as a refurbished kit from canon about 3 weeks ago for my wife and wanted to see what this camera can do.

Let me just say this: If somebody with a "better" camera utters something like "Oh, you have just a Rebel" ... just turn around, don't talk nor listen to those people.

The urge to upgrade a camera body comes and goes, sometimes the urge wins. In my case at least. I come from a Canon A1 (1981) then a 300D in 2003, a 40D in 2006 and the 50 D since 2009. So, just 4 camera bodies over 30 years - but I cannot recall through how many lenses I went...

Good lenses are the key, the guy behind the lens, luck and a lot of TIME!

Below are two shots with the 200 f/2.8L. Both shot within minutes from each other. Same distance, tripod used, ISO 200 and f/2.8

One was shot with 50D the other with the 1000D ... if you can tell which is which without cheating (checking the exif data) ... I cannot - not even on a large screen at 100%...

Mind you, you have a 50% chance here.... ;)

Have fun!
