I have a question, can you use canon film lenses on this camera?

By film lenses do you mean that they are EF type lenses or FD lenses?
EF yes. FD no.
You asked about "canon film lenses" - I'll first assume you mean actual Canon brand lenses (not 3rd party for Canon). DavidG is correct - any Canon EF lenses will work on your camera. I've never heard of autofocus not working just because it was an older EF lens on a digital camera (could be, I just never heard of it). The lens type before EF was the FD and they didn't have autofocus - also they have a different mount. You can get adapters to use a FD lens on an EF body, but there (obviously) will be no autofocus. Do some research if this is what you want to do - there are two different types of adapters and how yu want to use them impacts which you should get.
On this topic (but not exactly what you asked), is the EF-S lenses. They work on crop sensor bodies (like yours) but they will not work on full-frame bodies or EOS film bodies.
When you talk about other manufacturers' lenses for Canon, there could be problems when using an older version on the new digitals. Many of the old Sigmas need/needed to be "rechipped" to work with the new digitial bodies and that is not possible anymore for some. Most will still work, but you might not have full features.
So, if you have old EF lenses, they will work on your XS/1000D. If you want to save some money, that is a way to go, but it is like anything else when you decide to buy used, you might not get the same as the new and latest lenses offer. Also remember that some of the early EOS/EF lenses come from the late 80's /early 90's.
