Are you opting out of the matrix style metering canon defaults to?

I'd also like to know this as well.

Also, what kind of lenses do you guys use? The 18-55mm lens that came with the camera is really starting to show its weaknesses especially when I'm doing macro shots.

LAtino heat the 55-250mm lens is widely regarded as a "next step" lens for us 18-55 "beginners" who are ready to move on.

This thread is pretty great in terms of showing off its usefulness. : https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=459569

PS : Jan, stunning shot what was your aperture on that one? Looks like it was maybe neutral f11 ish?

The 1000D was my first real introduction to DSLRs. I think it's a great DSLR to start with and this thread shows how some great shots can be had from it.

Over the last year I've grown a lot more interested in improving at photography with future overseas travel in mind. So I've been out and about practicing.

I got the book "Understanding exposure - Bryan peterson" It's an excellent read, highly recommended if you're just starting out with a dslr.

I had the 18-55 non IS and I didn't like it one bit, not really a macro lens. The IS version is a lot better but I upgraded to a Tamron 17-50mm non vc and it's a very nice lens. For macro I'm going to get a Canon 100mm 2.8 macro, check out the lens archives for example shots, both that and the 60mm macro are great lenses

I read petersen, he's awfully fond of himself. I liked the book just fine but its not really for beginners IMO. He says way too many things in the book that have no meaning to beginners without a step by step walkthrough. "metered" and "recomposed" are two words he uses throughout that book that are never explained.

but we're covering all this on another thread :)

Which Kenko 1.4 did you get. I have a 400mm F5.6L on order, but have been thinking about getting the 1.4 tc to get close to the 300mm midrange.

I got the 1.4x Pro300 DGX

Here's a thread discussing tc's and the 100-400

/edit, whoops sorry, just noticed you're getting a 400mm not the 100-400!
