I will probly pick up the 55-250 and get comfortable with the range of the lens before I purchase the 70-200mm 2.8. I dont want to purchase the F4 because most of my shooting would be inside a gymnasium and I need the 2.8 for the lighting.

In regards to the IS comment I made about it being a marketing ploy..you could take that either way. I have tested using the kit lens tripod mounted with and without the IS. When my lens was completely still with the IS i couldnt get the shot as sharp as it could be...without I was able to get the shot. Is it me or do you actually have to be moving for the IS to make a difference?

Thanks in advance.

actually when you have an IS lens on a tripod, you should turn the IS OFF. you pictures will look loess sharp with IS ON and while ON a tripod :D there are explanations around the forums about it. (the short version: IS compensates for movement even if the camera is perfectly still, so there is some "movement" while your camera is mounted on a tripod.

The real test is shooting handheld with and without IS on the long end.

Usually the lens should automatically detect if it's mounted to a tripod and turn IS on by itself so you don't actually have to switch it off

Depends on the lens. Usually it is only the newest L lenses that do that. I can confirm 100% that the 18-55 and 55-250 do not do this and produce softer images on a tripod with IS on.

i can confirm that the kit lens will produce softer images with IS on while on the tripod.

some of the newer lenses have 2 types of IS you can switch between.

from Wikipedia:

Image stabilizer mode switch: This switch is found on most EF lenses that feature an image stabilizer. The switch has two settings Mode 1, and Mode 2. Mode 1 is normal mode, used for typical photography, where the subject does not move. Mode 2 is used for panning, this is useful for sports or wildlife photography, where the subject moves constantly and one will need to pan. One should not use Mode 1 for panning as this will typically cause blurred photographs. Most older lenses that have an image stabilizer, but do not feature this switch, are permanently in Mode 1. However newer lenses, such as the Canon EF-S 18-200mm lens, are able to detect if they are being panned in either axis and will auto disable the stabilization for the axis parallel to movement. Therefore they do not need this switch.

Figure I'll post up a couple. Nothing that I would call "good", just some random shots. I'm still new to the DSLR game so most of my shots are practice/experimenting to learn.

Caught one of my cat looking particularly evil with the red eye.

And a couple of the bikes (yes I know they are dirty). I had just got my 50mm and had to find something to play with.
