Ok, so here's how it went down...

About a week or so ago i sold my 85 1.8 because I just wasn't impressed with the lens. I really think that it's just that I don't like the focal length, so i sold it to get the sigma 50mm 1.4! Got the Sigma in the mail on Monday and what a nice lens it is... I like it much better than the Canon 50 1.4.

BUT ANYWAY on to the main point. I was scanning the local sale ads yesterday when i saw an 85 1.2L MK I for sale for a pretty good price. So what I immediately thought was that I would buy the lens and then just re sale it for a little more. I hear everyone rant and rave about the 85L, and I've been VERY impressed with the pictures from it in these forums, but I just thought that this lens wasn't for me because I like the 50 mm focal length better.... I was SADLY mistaken, or should I say GLADLY mistaken. This lens is AMAZING! IT IS SO SO SHARP WIDE OPEN! Everything about it has impressed me! I have fallen in love with the 85L so it looks like my Sigma 50 mm 1.4 is gonna have to go back up for sale since I cannot afford to keep both.

Has this ever happened to any of you guys before where you had FULL intentions on buying a lens and selling it for a slight profit, but loved the lens too much to sell it? Just wanderin if I was the only one that has been 85L struck like this!

Below are a couple of B&W samples that I took earlier... these are really nothing special and maybe just snap shots to some of you, but much better than I could ever get from my 85 1.8 or any other lens in my bag. Hopefully I'll learn how to use this thing pretty soon!

DAD!

I know what you mean and the challenge is in camera to subject distance, focal plane and DOF. Once that combination is mastered, specially in low light and wide open, the results are breathtaking. At night with high ISO it is also a stellar performer.

Yes this is an amazing piece of machinery. Does the 50L compare at all to this 85L MK I?

IMO, yes, easily.

But then, I have a problemless copy currently. Actually, the 50L is permanently mounted to the 5D II, and last night I took the 85L II out of the bag, because I wanted to shoot with a few other lenses. I use the 85L a lot less these days. The 50L is just the perfect walkaround to me :D.

Kind regards, Wim

P.S.: It is a remarkable lens, however. One I won't sell, for sure. Congrats with your purchase!

85L - True Sweetness...especially if you got a good deal on her.

Congrats!
