You have to make sure you get a white market Sigma and not a grey market for the 4 year warranty.

I trust B&H...I've given them a lot of my retirement $'s in the past dozen or so years. :D

After having the Sigma for about 72 hours, I love it. Much sharper than my canon and a more robust size. I love the build and feel... also the fact that it's a 77mm thread so my filters for the 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 will fit it. They aren't real easy to find for sale either but today happens to be your luck day!!!

I'm about to put my Sigma 50mm 1.4 up for sale as I STUPIDLY bought an 85L for a great price thinking that I would just flip it and make some extra cash... Well I took about three pics with the 85L and decided it's not leavin unless it's for the 50L. So that means the Sigma's gotta go! PM me if you are interested. It is like BRAND NEW!

Would the Sigma warranty apply to a re-sale?

I did a google search to see if Sigma's warranty is transferable and it looks like they're not, but that does not mean Sigma will not service them.

Now, that said, I have not registered the warranty yet So I would THINK that you could just register it and it would be all good, but I'm not Sigma so I am not 100% sure.

give the buyer a copy of the original receipt and that should take care of everything. To be honest, the company doesn't have the time to check if you are the original buyer, as long as you have proof that 'someone' bought it from an authorized dealer within it's warranty period.

99% of the time, this is the case, and all you need is a copy of the receipt. If they question you, just say your uncle's name is on the receipt becaust it was a gift, or something like that.

Thanks for all the replies and comments on the two lenses.

I've decided to go with the Canon. In fact, it's on order with B&H and should be here in a few days (free shipping). :)

The weight difference and size were two deciding factors for me along with the many good reviews that I've read on line.

It wasn't an easy decision but it's made.

Checking the specs of each more closely, I found that the Sigma weighs 1.1 lbs. while the Canon weighs .64 lb.

Most of the reviews list "heavy" as the most mentioned con of the Sigma. I can get a feel of this when comparing it to the 1.4 lbs. of my 17-55mm f/2.8 which I use most of the time but admit that it does get heavy for extended walking periods.

The Sigma comes w/a lens hood, the Canon is extra of course @ $26.95.

Nearly every reviewer/owner says they would recommend both lenses to a friend.

I'm not yet sold on either right now.

Is it just me ? But I would not let the weight of any of these lens be a factor.
I would not call any of them "heavy". To me, they all seem very light.

I was never impressed w/ my 50 1.4 from canon. It was never sharp wide open. I traded it in for a sigma 30 1.4 and I am in love! I don't think I'd ever buy the canon version again. That said- some folks love theirs. I would buy sigma hands down!

Dont feel like its a hard decision. The Canon 50 f/1.4 is a decent performer at f/1.4. The bokeh isn't bad either. My Canon 50 f/1.4 has been extremely accurate regardless of length.

I typically shoot at f/2 to f/2.2 so I get less chances of OOF shots anyways so I do like my Canon version.

I am gonna gamble on either a 50L or Sigma one of these days but I do know I'll have my trusty Canon 50 f/1.4 (hope I dont get AF motor issues)

I've owned both, and the Sigma is better, the bokeh is hands-down superior, as is the build. I sold my Sigma though, bought the 50L, and haven't even thought about buying gear since. Best lens purchase I've ever made.

Perry, do you like the 50L better than you like your 85L?? Just wondering because I recently bought an 85L because the price I got it at was a steal and that's the only reason... I planned on flipping it. But I do like the 50mm focal length better, i just fell in love with the pictures I got from the 85. Is the 50L similar or better?

Similar or better? Not even close. The 85L wipes the floor with the 50L. But having a solid 50 is hard to beat. I use the 50L a lot more, but the 85L is the superior lens, by quite a bit. Having both is pretty epic.

That's what I figured, but I do love the 50 focal length so I had to ask. Wish I could afford both right now, but ain't no way! Didn't even think I could afford the 85L, but I'm gonna have to because it's not leavin for a while unless it's for a Mark II version. I just can't wait till I get used to it as there is a slight learning curve to the 85, or maybe I just suck that bad... lets hope it's a learning curve! :)

The 85L does take getting used to, but when you nail it...hot damn. Be sure to try some full body shots close to wide open with a distant background, the results are jaw-dropping.
