Did my first senior shoot. I welcome any CC on these as I have a few more sessions coming up. I took a lot of these pictures and put them in the GA templates. You can see them here: http://www.maloneactionshots.com/p121603714 (external link)

They look good. She should be happy with them. My only observation is that 1,2,3, and 6. all seem like they ought to be framed vertically instead of horizontal. Doing a headshot horizontal can work, especially if you get the subject out of the middle of the shot. But you have 4 horizontal headshots in an 8 shot set. Given that senior shots are often printed small for wallets and such a traditional vertical headshot would be nice. #2 is cropped way too tight.

I have to agree about the orientation. They don't call it portrait for nothing.

Would be interested to hear what you used for lighting.

Also, I noticed you are only charging $5 a photo for digital download?

I concur.
#7 - crop negative space at top, mid tones look a little dark.
#8 - she is too centered - use of rule of thirds would improve this one.

Try to get tonality of all the pics the same. Some look nicely saturated, color falls short on others.

Nice exposure/white balance and poses.

I was using a 580exII. I tried a few OCF but I need more practice.

Thanks for the digital download reminder. I did that for a favor and forgot to remove it. It has since been deleted.;)

I'll remind myself about the orientation next time. I get going and forget some of the others things trying to focus on everything else. Thanks!

5, 6 tend to look the best of the bunch IMHO....

I like them the poses are great, because they are portraits I would crop them in a little tighter.

This tend to make you focus on the subject. I hope you don't mind these have a slight crop and gives a more personal look.

The 3rd picture the white balance need to adjust warmer.

Thanks for the comments and I don't mind the crop edit. The reason I left the negative space because I knew that I was going to be putting them into templates and I didn't want to crop so tight that they wouldn't fit.

Here are my comments.

Most have her too centered in the frame. #2 is an awkward composition with her chin on the lower edge.. just too tight in on her face.

#5 is too wide a view and taken from too high above her. Move in tighter and lower and you'll get a much different look.

#7 has bad lighting with the strong lit sky and her in the shadows. She's also in a pure side view which doesn't seem to flatter her figure very well. The pose and shot is rather stale and stiff.

You say you have more session scheduled.. I would hope you pickup a book or 2 about outdoor portraits and portrait posing.

Did you have her open her eyes WIDE for you on some of them? It's the extra white in her eye, it looks like she was scared of you or something.

#5 - I had to get higher to remove the ugly buildings and parking lot in the background.
#7 - Everytime I would turn her on a 45* angle, she would twist back around. I gave in and took the picture. There are many other poses on the RR tracks but I didn't like the ones of her sitting down. Didn't do anything for her.
I did buy two books on posing and I tried my best at the time to do them. I've also read all of Benji post about posing but so many things going through my mind I forget a lot of the simple things.:)

Thanks. My favorites are #1 and #3. They look so much better on my computer than they do on the this post.

I did feel that she was scared of me. She has very BIG eyes.

Those are nice explanations, but they are just excuses because those photos are not that good. If she is not posing how you want her to, you need to instruct her better possibly doing the pose yourself for her to see. And if the location isn't good, it just isn't good. Not to be rude, but photo #5 makes her look more like a seal.

She has a pretty face, but is a little big below her chest, so full body shots of her including ones sitting down probably won't flatter her well like 5 or 7.

She has a beautiful smile, show it more in your photos. Serious doesn't suit her in my opinion.

6 is my favorite out of these. I also like 3.

Number 7 doesn't work for several reasons. Partly because of the smile and outfit. I know, I'm weird. Train track shots are usually more serious, risky, artsy type. Definitely a certain mood you need to shot for. I feel that you will get better results with a wardrobe change (pants) with a more serious stare while on the tracks. Also the sky is badly blown out.
