You seemed to have found a good location on track. As you mentioned, the shots are a little soft. Are you using single focus or AI servo?

i was using AI focus mainly where i was the bikes suddenly came in to view and were in the corner so quick so part of it may be my panning not quite quick enough. i even tried manual focus on there but shots the same so may be me.i had been told lens was soft at 300 but you need 300 at donni .going to mallory later in year so will see what i get there.
cheers shane

Don't use AI Focus, EVER, for anything. AI Servo for a moving subject, One shot for a static subject.

There's a very good reason why Canon don't put AI Focus on the 1-series. It doesn't work :)

i thought i had set it to ai servo but just got camera out to take some shots of baby and found it on ai focus doh school boy error.

cheers for the advise i would normally have given myself more time tracking bike but the position i was standing and corner i was trying to get pic was making hard work for myself.

i did a better job last year and took pic on second corner of esses i had hired 300f4
