I tend to avoid the deathstars. :p

Ditto, but I figured that now they're being made by hitachi, they might be better. WD, I heard both good and bad about (nothing like the darkstars, though), My other option would be fujitsu. I haven't managed to kill one yet. I did have a deathstar and it lived up to its name, I'm afraid. the 1GB fujitsu - five years it's senior - was still going strong when I de-commisioned the BSD firewall in favour of a dedicated netgear router. FWIW it was the root partition of a linux box with the desksplat serving as /var, /home and /usr. Had an older seagate as the swap drive. The fujitsu was re-formatted and had BSD installed. This was 6 years ago. I'm betting that If'n I arc up the box it'll boot first go.

I'd love to play with a 200 F1.8 or even F2:p

Just got off the phone to my dad. My grandmother (88 this weekend) was in a car accident today. Luckily she was unhurt (except for bruising) but it could have been very serious. She was stopped at the lights to turn and a large SUV with a bull bar slammed into her at 60km/hr, sending her into the oncoming traffic, clipping another car. Her car is a total write off, the force of impact broke her car seat and it ended up horizontal.

Just glad she's unhurt.

I had a very similar accident. I head-butted the passenger window and spent 4 hours under observation for concussion in casualty (OzSpeak for ER). I made some life-changing and possibly wrong decisions immediately thereafter. Keep a close eye on your grand-mum and ask her if she is sure about things, especially about any big decisions.

I had another piece of glass emerge from my forehead three days ago. The accident was in 1985 and I'm dead-scared that one such fragment will migrate into an eye socket. Glass is pretty much invisible to X-rays.

I hope that your gran's alright.

What's the 7D shutter lag issue?

Canon extrapolated the shutter delay from the 15MP 50D. Apparently, the 7D starts the second curtain a bit too early as the extra 4 MP were calculated at 18.835 rather than 19.283 MP

Edit: Oh, wait. I thought that I was replying in the rumour thread. My bad.

The analysis has reached new heights of pixel peeping :p

Hard to believe the pixels are being peeped before the image has even been acquired now!

Y'all need to see this thread

May be the all time champ for getting something for nearly nothing.

The last time I got what I considered a bargain, it was a 50 f/1.8 metal mount for $75. The guy 'threw in' the EOS 650 body it was attached to. That was in a pawn shop in Reno.

I just found out that the 7D might be worth it after all.

My primary complaint about it was the pixel smearing that literally wiped away detail. Then, realizing that it is a function of NR, I figured I could turn it off.

I managed to find shots with no NR at all, and that gives me a lot of hope for the 7D because the detail is all there and that means the shot can be saved. I can then disable NR on camera and do my NR in post. It is kinda disappointing since the 5D2's on-camera NR is really good. However, this is precisely the kind of thing that firmware can fix.

Looking at the non-NR images, my assessment is that the 7D is on par with the old 5D classic. That is a very good assessment especially for APS-C, at 18MP!

The 5D2 still has better colors, contrast, tones, but there is no substitute for a FF sensor. Most of this is only visible at 100% zoom anyway.

So perhaps there is room for a 7D in my future :)

In avalanche prone areas of the mountains, particularly vulnerable stretches of roadway or rail lines are protected by a reinforced structure that keeps that section from being damaged or covered in the event of an avalanche.

Hmmm being a flatlander where a bump in the road is concidered a hill ya think I would have known that. :)

I've tried somethig similar with macro shooting but have had spotty results. Diffraction effects start becoming visible. For instance, this was taken at f/22 on a 40D. Nice DOF but lacks crispness.

Let the beta testers work that out. There's still a few months till Christmas and new year, right? :D

I might buy in early 2010 once the kinks have been worked out. Hopefully, a price adjustment would make things even sweeter.

My primary system is still FF. The 7D is a nice toy and nice addition, but wouldn't be a primary camera. That's the 5D2

Interestingly I was one of the first in line for the 40D and I got very, very lucky - there were no problems with the 40D. Only one shop had it on the day of release - the rest were giving me the pre-order bull. I said I'd walk down the street to the big shop and cash-and-carry: which I did.

'Circumstances' dictate that I won't be buying any more equipment for a very long time, if ever. I was happy to learn that the 7D is a crop body because I'm raelly locked into FF from here on. I have a 40D, and two EF-S lenses (10-22 and 17-85), and I rarely use them, especially since buying the 5D2.
