Sounds exciting to me. The last time I went "Foaming" was probably 10 years ago. I had some 3megapixel Olympus something or other, and we were looking for the last of the "bloody noses" (Southern Pacific Gray and Scarlet). The "Banannas" (newly appointed Union Pacific number) really contrasted with the weather beaten SP colors.

I'm an old SP fanboy. I understand the term 'bloody nose.'

In fact, the very first SP unit I saw in that livery was an Alco PA that had just been repainted in their shops at the Taylor Yard in Los Angeles. The railroad was a bit more casual about people wandering around their facilities, and a couple of my train buddies and were exploring when we spotted it. It was sooooo ugly, especially after the Daylight colors. This would have been around 1958 or 1959.

"58 or "59 around the time my Auntie was dragging me to pick up GrandPa, he worked on the SP, I think that's where I got the train bug. Funny, how when I stood up beside the Cab Forward at the Sac RR Museum, I knew what it sounded like, but I would have been like 2 in 58.

There is a quantity of "bloody noses" in El Paso, TX....some are ex-SP, some are ex-Cotton Belt and some are from a leasing concern. The paint jobs are growing old and there are an alarming number of panels that have been replaced that are painted in UP yeller. I think I could spend a couple days in EP and turn up a dozen or more.

Yes, Killjoy is in Clayton. I'm pretty close to where Clayton Rd. and Bailey Rd. connect, so we're pretty close. Perhaps some weekend we can schedule to "shoot" something.

The SP certainly had some interesting paint schemes. I would think my least favorite would be the Koadachrome, but then I associate that attempted merger as the death knell for SP.

If only......

I was a teenager during the last years of steam on the SP. I can't tell you how many opportunities I had to get pictures of some rare engines. In those days, however, diesels were a lot sexier, and new ones were coming out so often, it was a challenge trying to keep up with what was what. One of the reasons I didn't take a lot of steam photos back then was the deplorable appearance of most of it. They had removed the skirts from the Daylight engines, and everything needed paint. In hindsight, it is sad to consider all the still-functional engines that were scrapped in their prime. Some of the newer cab-forwards and Daylights were barely 10 years old when they were put to the torch. It was not unusual to see entire trains of dead steamers being pulled by diesels, no doubt to a wrecking yard.

It's hard to think about some of the best steam technology ever put on rails was sold for scrap by the ton. In some cases, entire classes were destroyed with a single example remaining, the 5000-class 3-cylinder, for example.

Oh well. I'm off to fix lunch.

Yeah. That was pretty ugly. Santa Fe got rid of them almost immediately, but SP kept theirs around for a while......too cheap to pay for an unnecessary paint job.

Good idea!

But for now, time for me to rip out a wall in the kitchen...

That sounds like a lot of work.
For me, lunch and a nap will help me get over this cold.
It's been a pleasure meeting all of you.
