The built in level is a sweet feature.

Thanks for that Lisa.

It's a pretty comprehensive body. I especially find the "Orientation AF" kind of interesting.

it looks pretty cool.

I was trying to figure out why it's an xD...that's why I read the review. Because it isn't FF or a 1.3 crop so I don't know why it's not an xxd. I never did figure it out.

Yeah, that had me puzzled too, Lisa...why a 7D and yet a cropped sensor?

Maybe because of the video.

Unless they didn't want to really $&%* off all those who bought a 5DII and decided to keep the sensor cropped for now....maybe they will wind down production of the xxDs....

I dunno but if it is as good as it looks, it's going to be a nice new addition to the lineup.

In one of the 1000 7D threads, someone explained it like this:

You start with the XXXD bodies then move up to the XXD bodies.

Beyond that, the Canon Tree branches:
- One branch goes 5DMkII, 1DsMkIII (Full Frame .. Slower FPS .. Mondo MP)
- One branch goes 7D, 1DMkIII (Crop Body .. Fast FPS .. Not As Mondo MP)

The "Odd Duck" at this point is the 1DMkIII but I'd bet a dollar that the 1DMkIV ends up leapfrogging the 7D. I have a hunch the next round of 1-series will carry some  and Awe...

It does look like a nice camera...just wish they would can the video crap...I'm sure there is a niche market for it...but putting video on a DSLR makes no sense at all to me. Kind of like putting a microwave in your blender. Both are handy...but don't really seem suited to be a pair.

It might be that Canon is phasing out the 1.3 crop. It was sort of a bastard child after al. It's only there because in the old days the processors just could not move around all the data as fast as needed to get the frame rates up. With multiple data channels and multiple procs that is no longer an issue. Also with pixel densities getting up there the 1.3 crop advantage is just not there anymore.

I can easily see Canon falling back to two formats, crop and FF.

I did not even know there was a 1D Mk III and a 1Ds Mk III....I thought they were the same thing....If you're spending that much money, why would you want a crop body?

Actually...I like the 1.3x crop...but it doesn't really matter to me...I look through the viewfinder of whatever camera I use and go from there. What you see is what you get and all that.

Thats my philosophy. I dont care if it a P/S or camera phone. All I care about is the image quality and capability. I dream of the day when all this gear is shrunk down into something i can carry in a pocket instead of a back pack and a second shoulder bag.

for me, there's a few things I've noticed in the varying "crops" of the sensors.

The DOF is narrower on the same lens (say I put the 85 1.2 on a 40D...it has a narrow DOF but if I put it on the mark III it has a narrower DOF than the 1.6 crop and on FF it's practically miniscule).

The other thing I noticed was noise handling. They cram all those pixels on a smaller sensor and get more noise. I'm interested in seeing how if the new camera is any different.

The only thing I don't like about the 5D2 (aside from the fact that lots of people post oof shots) is the way it handles high iso. Lots of chroma noise. (don't know if that's because so many pixels were on the same size sensor as it's predecessor or what). And I've had no "hands on" with it...so it could just be users under exposing. I've just been perusing the photo threads.

I really liked the 1.3x and the FF from canon. Those were my favorites.

There was a post that had a couple test photos from 5D classic and 7D comparing ISO 800 and 3200. The 5D photos was BETTER than 7D in terms of detail and noise.
